I've never had a Starlet rear caliper apart so can't give you any specific advice, but I wouldn't expect them to be too different from most Toyota rear calipers. Stripping and rebuilding them can sometimes be a fiddly job, but if you take your time and try not to rush then you'll do OK. It would be worth picking up some fine wet & dry abrasive paper, something like 1200 or 1500 grit, just in case you need to clean up any surface corrosion from either the piston or cylinder wall.

An exploded diagram of an EP91 rear caliper might help you:

Also these few pages from the SW20 MR2 BGB might be of some help to you as well mate:

i rebuilt a front one on mine, piston seal was fucked, and if you dont have much patience, dont even bother, i must have took days, everytime summit pissed me off, i just went outa the garage and into the house. the best of it is, i think my missus old man took the rebuilt one to the scrappy, as i cant find it in the garage.

Thread Revival.
I have just bought a rebuild kit for the rear calipers on my GT. I was going to take the car to my trusted garage, but are they simple enough to DIY?

I can just about wind the piston back on either side, but after around a week the wheels no longer spin freely

They look a total nuisance from the parts diagrams lol, mine used to work but by the time I parked it up it was pretty much useless

I considered a na axl with drums at 1 point
i've investigated and followed various members who had ideas about different set ups that may be "direct fits" ---similar to how we have options for the front brakes from other models...but this has come up empty every time

it seems it would require something custom or some kind of rally car hydraulic set up---not really an option of me

we may have to ask azerty (i think) if he ever found anything

Probably have to be a custom setup bud, I mind years ago(late 90s)a mechanic I knew worked at Nissan and had a Micra SI like mine, he did the rear disc conversion and near sure it was almera hubs etc he used, straight swap job too from memory.

I've had the same issues with all the Toyota/Lexus models I've owned. Probably because they are all the same vintage I suppose.

Could be worse - could be those electric setups manufacturers fit these days lol

Best advice i can give is not to keep the handbrake on especially when its cold outside. If my car is being parked up for a long period of time i keep it in gear rather then keeping the handbrake on
