I can get another bumper and tailgate for £80 all in. That only leaves me with hammering out out the back panel (block of wood job), or just replacing it £170, should I go for the claim against their insurance, or just sort it myself. I've not agreed to anything with the insurers yet.

If I was you I would go through insurance, I had a similar incident where someone pulled out on my, obviously not quite the same as you but total 3rd parties fault. I had a 96 spec Glanza at the time.

I went through my insurance company and they did everything for me, I called them immediately after is happened. You can claim directly off the 3rd parties insurance, chances are they will call you and ask you to do this as it saves them money. My car was a wreck and couldn't be driven so first thing insurance sorted me was a courtesy car, like straight away and I had it the next morning.

They then sent a valuator out who wrote off the car and made me an offer, I said no to this offer, its worth more, sent in some pics of it looking all nice and clean, stated its rareness and the fact the nearest one for sale was over 50 miles away and sent in some over priced adverts for other Glanza's. In the end they agreed on £3750 which was £50 less than I payed for it 3 years ago when I first bought it!

I then bought it back off insurance for £750, meaning they just pay out £3000, stripped all the modified parts off sold the engine and damaged shell for £600. I sold all the modified parts and made around £1500 I also put a personal damages claim in that paid out £2600.

I then bought a newer better 98 spec Glanza for £3750 meaning I was £3950 up!

My insurance premiums all stayed the same as its none fault.

Just be sensible and don't let insurance rip you off and you can end up in a much better situation.

You have to add the cost and unknowns. I tried this once and regret it. Bought a new bumper which was black and needed undercoat + 2 cover coats to cover and a clear coat so was costing way too much I found a cheap place to do it for $400. Next there was bracket damage and structure + clips etc damaged under the bumper now 3 yrs on the paint is all peeling off the car had I gone with insurance our insurance repairs must be lifetime guarenteed so I would not have this peeling car.

Just had the assessor up and he has given me a figure to get it repaired myself. He couldn't believe it was a 1996 car, and was very impressed with the condition. I'll be happy once I get the cheque in my hands from the insurer!

Can take a while.

When I bought my car back, they charged me 4% of the value of it, and free delivery of it back to anywhere in the UK!
