Rear Lights Constantly On

Hi guys,

I took the GT on a big road trip today. About 30mins away from my destination, the car began to get quite hot... Temperatures down here are sky high today and I was sat in traffic for a good while. The fan was kicking in so guessing the thermostat wasn't at fault?
Stupidly I removed the rad cap too soon and coolant exploded everywhere.
I topped it back up and turned the heaters on full blast and it seems to be running normal again. However now my rear lights are constantly on, even when car is switched off.
Is there anything in the bay that could have got water damaged, to cause this ?

Thanks

When you say a bit hot do you mean the coolant temp gauge went above half?

For the brakelights, check the brakelight switch at the pedal is moving, doubt coolant will have got near it, should be unrelated.

Doesn't sound related but you never know.

as jay said, check the the brake light switch/grommet at the brake pedal, if you see small pieces of plastic near your feet on the floor mat under the brake pedal , then its probably a broken switch/grommet...you can unplug the switch so it wont drain your battery BUT then you want have any brake lights at all when you are driving

check your ecu temperature sensor/switch in the thermostat housing and see if its faulty

the two issues are most likely unrelated

Yeah Jay, temp guage went above half way.
I've since realised my aftermarket rad fan was wired in the wrong way around, so I doubt that was doing me any favours.
I dropped the coolant, flushed the system etc and seems to be ok now.

The brake light switch gromit had fallen off, so managed to fix that and now have working brake lights :)

Thanks. As you said the gromit had broken off in the foot well. I glued it back on to the brake light switch and all working fine now.

Good stuff.

The fact the fan was kicking in means that at least you know the system is working. Hopefully it's just the lack of cooling due to the fan direction that was causing it. Hard to tell if any damage has been caused but the headgasket is designed to be the first thing that fails so you could always get a compression test done to reassure yourself everything is okay.

I'm praying there was no damage, done but it cant hurt to get a compression test.
I was out in it again today - 33 degrees down here - sat in traffic and it seemed to be fine.
