rebuilt turbo smokes :(

rebuilt my CT9 yesterday as last year it smoked so bad on idle it was embarrassing.

i refitted it today and it smokes, but differently to before!!!!!

previously it would only smoke if sat for long periods or if i poodled around and then thrashed it.

now its fine on idle, but will smoke after thrashing it (which previously would clear up the smoking) or a little bit if i rev it when its been on idle for a while.

boosts up perfectly fine and sounds fine, just has the smoking issue.

any ideas other than paying someone £4000000 to rebuild it for me!?

Give the seal a chance to "coke up" and I bet it will be fine mate.

i was thinking along those lines. there was a lot of carbon build up on the exhaust side. its only had a short run tbh.

i would go hybrid, but wanted something to do over christmas as i dont celebrate it. plus i want it stock :)

If your car was smoking on idle are you sure it was the turbo??

Could have been pcv valve?

Check in the intercooler for oil.

it was the turbo, smoked on my other engine a bit before i changed to the TD04.
engine was rebuilt last year. head has had new guides and seals. brand new pcv valve. its smoking out of the exhaust side. little bit of residual oil in ic pipes, but nothing worth worrying about.

just fired it up again as i didnt bleed the cooling system 100% 1st time round and needed to finish off a few bits and bobs. its not too bad when the engine is cold and the oil is thick, once it gets warm it smokes pretty bad. a blue mist from behind, pretty much all the time. noticeable drop of oil level on the dipstick too :(

looks like its going to have to come off as i cant see it getting any better. its as though it has no seal in at all!!!!

did ya prime it before you put it back on..?? was it a CT9A or B..?? i find once the B's blow, they are fecked.. the cast in around the oil seal on exhaust side crumbles to shit letting more oil than normal in around there and also ruins the bearing and shaft.. the A is a much stronger turbo.. if the shaft was worn where the bearing sits, a new seal will wear out very fast also.. let the oil cake up a bit as weejohn said and see will it stop.. will take some time tho..

Just an idea... How much miles have you done since the rebuild? Maybe the exhaust flexible pipe is soaked in oil...

Check for oil in the intercooler pipes and exhaust? Might be abit of oil lying from before the rebuild. Or it could be something else causing it to burn oil, I done vale stem oil seals on a gsi astra because a couple popped off but it also needed the turbo. I changed the seals first cause they were the cheapest.

I did prime it. It's a ct9a.
The exhaust didn't have loads of oil in or anything, Tbh, most people probably wouldn't have bothered changing it as it wasn't that bad.

It was throwing out too much oil to leave it. I would have to stop every 100 Miles to fill up with oil!!!
Just removed it and both sides are leaking oil by the looks of it :-(

I don't want to buy used if I can help it. The newest units will be 15 years old now.

Looking at the toyosports turbo. I know it's just a speedvision one, but it's reasonably priced.

I have a couple of spare ct9s to try, then I may have to bite the bullet if they don't work!

Had a full engine rebuild last year with new valve guides and seals.
The engine is fine, it's 100% the turbo. Will take some pics when I take it apart. But the inlet side has lots of oil in it, the exhaust side doesn't seem so bad Tbh! Probably my fault doing a bit of a rush job on it. Never mind ;-)

Was off eBay, a UK seller, turbo rebuild.co.UK

The kit seemed fine tbh, everything fit properly etc. It's either the turbo is just too worn, or I fucked up sonwhere. Will investigate in the coming weeks and report back with what i find. Going to fit my other rebuilt turbo tomorrow so fingers crossed!!!!

I rebuilt my turbo with an eBay kit, but it still smokes. I think if the shaft itself is worn too then new seals won't last long. I'm thinking of going td04 when I can afford it as they're easier to come by and cheap. Also more robust.

Trevor always said of all the turbos he checked at the biggest breakers here in N. Ireland, he never seen a bad even high milage turbo on an auto engine. The owner of the yard knew Trevor and asked him to check out engines and gearboxes for Starlets he brought in, usually about 20 at a time lol.
