hi guys long time no see,

not been on for ages, just reguarly browse through the forum.

anyhoo,

me and the missus will be shortly moving in to our first home, and have sold everything just leaving me with the mondeo st200.

as nice as it is, i need something a bit less juicy around town (on a run its great and i reguarly get 40mpg, round town its like 16mpg)

so i need something with a hint of sporting about it (i dont feel old enough to completely grow up yet) but also be cheap to run i.e tax cost, reliability etc.

the budget is a bit shit though with probably 5k tops.

what can u guys come up with, so far i keep hitting brick walls

An 06 BMW 1 series (118d) 2.0litre diesel, good MPG very comfy and you can get a 70k one for 5k or less.

lovely finish, nice on the motorway and around town.

I would say the 330d with a remap would be doing half the above mileage in towns.

I only really do long runs in it (45 miles to work almost all on the dual carriageway) but when I am doing short ones it doesn't dip much, even driving like you stole it still sees over 30mpg, my average over 20k miles is 46.5mpg

Great shout, my mates got one putting out about 180bhp. Its quick and great on fuel. He got his for 5k a year back.

my old man has got a 330d auto and he does pure town driving he gets 32mpg,

ive got a 320d auto and get 38mpg round town and around 60-65mpg on a run
