Rustproofing an EP

North West England Area Rep.
just thought i would update this.

After cleaning all the crusty bits back and treating any bad areas that were hard to reach with bilt hamber hydrate 80.
Then spray wax oil into all the cavities, chassis legs, sills everywhere possible until it runs out and goes everywhere!
Then replacing the seam sealer i removed with U-Pol grey
then 2k epoxy primer
then U-Pol gravitex stonechip sprayed with a schultz gun
then more 2k epoxy primer.
Then i will some some 2k over the primer and it will be done. plenty of layer there to protect it.

heres the first coat of primer

then seam sealer applied

then the stone chip

Ive done a coat of primer over this now and hopefully tomorrow it will be finished! Lots of work but hopefully it will keep it fresh for a long time to come.
Next it will be time to do the KP!

Nice update, looks very tidy indeed mate. Once mine lands back I'll be attacking it in hopefully the same way. Not looking forward to it tbh but the needs must!

When my last GT entered the country we coated the underside with waxoyl (used a spraygun) and after 5 years and 40k miles it was still immaculate (driven all summer and winter!).

Glad to see the GT is being patched up Jay :)

its always the bits you cant see that will be the issue. the bits that are open the the elements tend to fair better than the hidden crevices.

Did I not read years ago Ford Fiesta sills fit the starlets?

I have read that too, but not sure how close a fit they really are.

I was once told zetec valve guides for a 4efte head. The machine shop said they do not. They just used valve guides for a Toyota. So I don't always read everything I read all the time!

I used mk2 5 door fiesta sills when mine needed replacing was the closest fit i could find and at 16quid each were a bargain lol

I got lucky and got a set cut out of a breaker EP. Even they still had some corrosion that needed tackling so inspect before you buy.

Did they do a five door in the mk2?

Alas I may have spoken too soon.

Unfortunately my car is riddled with...rust :'(

Floorpan is coming away

It looks like someone jacked the car up on the body and pushed the floor pan away!!

And both sills are compeltely rotten.

is that first pic the rear footwell? i find it quite a common occurance the floor pan being bent due to incorrect jacking :(

i gave mine a going over a couple of years back and there is corrossion on the inside, but fortunately the outside is still strong. will have to have another look at it to make sure it hasnt rusted through. the car now not being used in the winter is going to prolong its life before i have to weld it.

let us know how you get on with the repairs. are both sides of yours bad, or just the one?

Yeah both sides are rotten.

Yes that's the rear footwell.

It does appear that someone has jacked the car up through the rear footwell. Although you can't see it in the photo, all of that has been caved in :(

It also looks like it's been poorly repaired as well, causing it to corrode between the welded plate and the original chassis.

I'm fortunate, my father is a VW camper nut, so this is nothing in comparison to what he's used to seeing :D

the poor repair isnt going to help .that is the cause of most corossion.

as you say, compared to a VW camper, that amount of rust is a walk in the park.

My Dad was saying, if this is a genuine Barn door:

People would pay serious money for it, and restore it lol

That's the Sill done...ish. Needs filling and painting.

Floor buck welded and painted, not here. Has been ground down. Looks a lot better and stronger.

Unfortunately, the other side is rotten too!

Both the sill and the floor! WTF

And the rot continues....

The floor rot is a bit mad!!! Havnt seen anything like that on an ep before? I wonder if its at least partially due to a failure of the seal/bung on the floor pan. I have had trouble with the front ones before letting water in.

I think my car has seen some serious abuse.

My Dad said that the sill we repaired has had some extensive damage done it it way back when. Almost as if the car was in a serious accident back when it was in Japan. He said the level of work was to a very high standard, something you simply wouldn't have done if the car was only worth a few K. :( Poor car.
