they laughed when audi introduced diesel power to le mans.... its just another way forward

diesels still havnt reached their potential. only the very latest ones drive ok. even a few of them now drive like a 2 stroke with a small powerband and no power anywhere else in the rev range.

its all about forced induction. it was popular in the late 80s-early 90s, then died off. now its back with avengeance and showing that you can have performance and economy.

very true... gone away from monster engines and turbos to monster turbos in eco cars... only the tip of the iceberg as you said

Its funny when you look at the change in attitude over here in America in such a short space of time. 4 years ago everyone wanted the jeep with the 5.7 V8 nd now they are going for half nothing and you cant buy a prius because there is such demand for them. Obviously this is driven by higher fuel prices but if things can change in such a small period of time maybe we are heading toward a car industry driven mainly by fuel economy?

Anybody know at what point a small engine becomes less efficient than a larger engine. Like if you had a car with 4 people in it and were going up a hill would a 1.5 engine have to rev less to make it up the hill and in turn use less fuel than say a 1ltr?

I think there is something very special about having a 1ltr car lap the ring at such high speed, its like giving the middle finger to bigger machinery.

all very true but how much money, man hours did ford pump into that machine for it to trash cars with huge price tags? hardly eco if you were to think of it that way but been a petrol head, its pretty cool :)

Absolutely they spent serious money but even as a marketing exercise it is interesting to show that small doesnt automatically mean slow. Every activity like this that they engage in helps shift peoples perception of what a small engined car is.

As for eco... haha certainly not. But again that would be the marketing department trying to program potential shoppers in to thinking eco doesnt have to mean "get you killed if you try to overtake".

Wonder how much they pumped in to that thing..

It's crazy to think that thing beat Pagani's and Lambo's around the ring. Great to see some tinkering and tuning on a small engine out perform the head honcho's! And as for that Cossie Fiesta..I would LOVE a rip in that thing!

id rather have a smaller displacement fast revving turbocharged engine... its true that there is no real replacment to displacement.... but in all honesty give me a responsive little engine any day over a big heavy torquey one.. ;)
