TD04 inlet not pointing down ? Pics of setups ?

Hey guys

I took off my TF035 today and seperated my TD04 from the exhaust housing to 'clock' it.

It seems the oil return is different even though they both look exactly the same ?

For me to get the oil return on the BOTTOM, the turbo's inlet is facing towards the drivers wheel whereas the TF035's inlet points DOWN whilst the oil return also points DOWN aswell.

I'm abit stumped as every photo I've seen has the inlet always pointing down on EP82's aswell as the oil return also facing down ?

You should be able toe rotate the exhaust housing as well, giving the core the freedom to clock to any position required.

as above. rotate the whole lot (exhaust and compressor housing) about until its in the position you want. that's all I did with mine!

Some will have a locating pin on the compressor side that might need a swift tap with a hammer. but it should be fairly obvious.

It made me laugh when i offered up my td04 next to the turbo i have on my scooby at the minute and the whole unit would fit inside the exhaust side of the one on there atm lol

Thanks a lot guys! I found it :D Now to buy some circlip pliers and attempt to spin it haha.

Rep to all! (Except dac69er since I need to spread more rep before giving it to him again :p )

UPDATE:

I've removed the circlip (I hope not to do that ever again! Took me about an hour whilst cursing with a proper circlip plier tool aswell).

I figured instead of grinding the little 'tab' that I would make another slit where I want the cartridge to sit, I put a bit of white paint on the tab and lined up my cartridge where I want it to sit so the white paint makes a mark on the cartridge which would act as a mark for me to cut:

Cartridge placed where I want it:

Here's the original hole that lines up with the housing:

And the tab that it slots into:

White paint wiped on it (whiteout could also work):

After placing the cartridge, you can see above the original hole (about 5cm above it, is a tiny white mark, hard to catch on camera):

In the vice it goes (becareful of the holes for the oil feed/return/water etc and the turbo fins). The white mark is more apparent here:

I didn't have a drill bit small enough and I was scared of it slipping (even if I did put use a center punch) and hitting the seal, so I opted to make a slit instead:

Hopefully this could help someone else if they didn't want to grind the tab off :)

I have one final question for the gurus out there, on the exhaust side of the turbo fin there is what seems to be this very large washer (looks like that anyway) and it free spins and touches the exhaust fins.. I don't think this is normal but it possibly could be ?

Fair play on relocating that slot, I just pulled my pin out with pliers!

As for the big washer thing, mine was exactly the same as are other turbo's I've seen, cant comment on what it is but I assume something in the housing holds it down, mine was fine!

I didn't bother with relocating the hole for the pin, its not needed.

as for the plate, its normal, the exhaust housing holds it in place

X2. I pulled the pin out with a pliers as well. If I had seem this thread earlier I would have advised accordingly. My td 04 is also rotated upwards.

Thanks for confirming :D

Making a new point to slot the pin in was just me being OCD I guess. I had thought it would possibly turn (which would probably be impossible) once it was all bolted up if it wasn't holding the cartridge in place haha.
