Looks like UKSO is offline at the minute, they are usually quite tech-savvy so hopefully back up soonish.

UKSC never recovered from the 'hack' I'm afraid. Just noticed the domain name is available if anyone is brave enough!

I don't remember any of that stuff happening, reading through the thread it is absolutely outrageous what happened there. There are people posting in that thread who don't seem to think there is anything wrong with theft of a database... what a completely disgusting thing to do. I wouldn't have been getting a solicitor involved I would have been getting the police involved as it was blatant theft.

The thread is a really interesting read all these years later. I got a giggle from someone asking "do people make money from running a forum?". The staff are and always have been volunteers and donations/membership fees covered the cost of hosting a couple of times but in the end were more hassle to manage than they were worth so we stopped those. The forum is kept online because there is a huge amount of information here and it has zero sources of income.

In relation to the database corruption or other issues that led to the demise of UKSC... we have had our challenges over the years too. We have had database corruption issues and have also even had the front page of the site hacked at one point, these things happen. Having the ability to recover from incidents like this through regular backups is very important. Over the years this has gotten much easier. Cloud hosting providers offer full snapshotting of server instances that you can recover from within a few minutes whereas some of the backup processes we were using in the past were a complete pain to manage and recover from if needed.

Social media has all but killed interactive forums but as an information resource they are really hard to beat. May people have now left social media or have never had an interest in using it and some of the old forums and other chat and communications systems that went out of fashion are seeing somewhat of a revival.

This had me thinking recently.... I wonder what a forum like this could be again if we put some time in to it. Who knows.

I remember all that. I used to scroll through UKSC constantly, well before I has passed my driving test. I'd read years worth of build threads and the technical pages. Thats when I knew I had to own a GT. Bought a silver shell for 300 quid and built it on apprentice wages.

It was just so cool back then. Lads were importing 4paws, selling parts and we were building cars that were far too quick for us.

But the site was always down and the mods did steal UKSC to make UKSO. As it turned out, the boy that used to run UKSC started bad mouthing a few hard core UKSC members years later on Facebook, even people that knew him personally and boy cotted UKSO for years.

Myself and a handful of local lads have had a whatsapp group ever since all that went down.

UKSO did become very successful but it was always tainted in my view. Facebook was the final nail it seems.

gave this a read, it seems from what jay said, coincidences happen, so do coup's.
the real takeaway is that realistically, TGTT is the main source for starlet related content, and i hope that never changes.

Trader
I am and always will be very grateful for tggt.com !!! back in 2001...i was just starting out with WEPR and Macker was kind enough to give me a huge hand by making me a trader on this forum (the rest is history). Tercelonline was another forum that really helped me too. honestly i feel that WEPR would not be where it is now without these two forums.

To this day i dont know if the stories about the forum/data theft are true..but if it is...then there's no excuse...theft is theft and what happened is very unfortunate.

i am never someone to speak ill of anyone...but in contrast the UKSC owner was not so nice...every time i asked him to become a trader on UKSC...he said would rudely say that he would "consider" it if i have up my trader status on tggt.com ...well, i was never going to do that to a forum (tggt) that helped me so much when i was starting out.

I hope the mods keep tggt.com going...i hope some day soon i can visit UK and Ireland again and meet some of the old "Lifers" in here...

One would argue that without WEPR then TGTT wouldn't be where it's at either :)

Tercel online - That takes me back!

Was a great community on there, plenty of info too. AUstarletclub was a nice place too. Too many good ships have gone down over the years!

I've a build thread on there I've not updated for a while I really should but tbh I don't think anybody reads it I've found loads of potential areas of concern for rust
Il share them on here as it seems pretty active had some major bodywork done as it seems a shame not to share it

As someone who manages their own server, hardware and software, I am surprised really.

I spend an hour or so a month just keeping the lights on. Montly patching, back-ups and the odd restore when the server dies.

The one thing I do get, that I ought to really fix, is a lot of bots. I get 5-10 sign ups a day, bots, then around 1-3 posts from bots a week.

It's small enough to just manually prune, but could easily be ficed by a few basic rules.

It was blatant theft Socks is a wank for what he did. Geo (Enzo) was struggling and needed help as UKSC was growing Socks offered his help based on his knowledge, geo gave him access to the backend and Socks, (Matt) I believe his name is, stole the database and ported it over to UKSO all usernames and passwords crossed over as well and that's what killed UKSC and I could never bring myself to follow over to UKSO.

I was alway wondering what ever happened, was just thinking it was a simple name change. I haven't been on it for years
