What ecu should I use..?

Hi guys.. I was just wondering if any of you could steer me in the right direction.. I'm currently forging my mk1 ep82.. the plan is to run a td04 with a ram horn manifold, up the fuelling including bigger injectors, sort the exhaust out and do something with the engine management to bring it all together.. could anyone tell me if a jam racing ecu would do me..? If not, some advice would me much appreciated Thanks

Seen a few different approaches to this. It's a big deal given the job that the ECU does.

First things first, what sort of power are you looking to achieve?

I've not really got a figure in mind mate to be honest.. my approach is just more fuel, more air, strengthen the insides so it doesn't go bang and see what we get The place I'm sending my block to says the stage two forge I'm after can run a td05 safely up to 350 bhp..

At that level a plug and play ECU isn't ideal, they cater more for the bolt-on level rather than forged, high-boost set-ups. As you go over 300bhp the horses are harder to capture so a greater emphasis is on the tune. A lazy, rich map will not make power and those ECU's usually have a lazy, rich map.. I own a few so can tell you this firsthand.

You'd be looking a fully manageable unit to squeeze the extra horses out and an experienced mapper to do it for you. The mapper is the key to which management to run. Case and point - We've all seen eManage Ultimate used on big power starlets before but nowadays technology has moved on and very few local tuners will even touch them never mind map them. Find someone who is proven and let them tell you the best options. No point buying something they have no experience with.

Please bear in mind that you can quite easily be talking four figures for a new ECU wired in and mapped to your requirements. I reckon this is one of the big reasons that long term projects are broken and parted out right at the end before they have even seen full throttle.

350 bhp out of a Starlet? That's a big ask and will need proper management not a plug and play bud.

You could have a look at the ME22 ECU's, but I am not sure they're rated to such high power.

Sounds like you will need a full standalone.

Locally the current flavor is Link, we have a few who are happy to map with them but you are looking at £1200+ depending on what you need. With big builds it's worth budgeting for management and mapping otherwise it's a bit of a shock.

Yeah, not the most reputable company by all accounts.

I haven't seen many people actually run that sort of power with a reliable dyno print out.

Not saying it can't be done, but I'd expect to be dropping vast sums of money for 350 bhp. 250 is achievable on a nice budget, then it seems any more than that and it's not really the engine that's the weak point. The gearbox just starts stripping cogs at 300bhp, to which I am yet to read about a work around.

read a lot of bad things about racetech a wee while ago.....
ECU is something I'm hopefully be getting this year, the ME221 looks good for all that i want and has been getting good reviews so far, LINK is another that has been used by a fee folk i know and they are all happy, at our local dealer g-sport cars they start from 1100£ fitted and mapped, a days dyno if i went with the ME221 is 350£ so not much between the two

i totally agree with the advice Jay gave you here....talk to your tuner(s) about your planned set up and find out what ecus they "like" and the prices....then you can do some research and decide

agree with all the advice given.

id just roll back round to the fact that if you would genuinely be happy with 250 and you dont have access to a tuner then a FCD /FPR combo would get you there or thereabouts with a td04 or similar sized turbo

definitely a fairly large chunt of cash (compared to the cost of a starlet itself) to go from 250 - 350hp.

personally i wouldnt forged or go ecu for 240/250.

Sounds like good advice, considering your Starlet was very well spec'd.

what Phil said :)i will be doing just that until i can afford the ECU and map, TF035 should see 200-220hp @1-1.2 bar.
Adam/Adzy made 231hp on TD04 with a fpr and fcd, self tuned using a wideband too
