a diesel run around.

right have just found out i am working in london for the forseable future so i dont fance putting over 120miles on the starbo a day! so am looking for a diesel which is economical around town and on the motorway. need to be bigger than the starbo as push chair and baby seat needs to fit in it. (borrowed my old mans Golf other day and that size was nice! nothing much smaller than that.) basically have about 1500quid, also needs to be turbo diesel as i dont want to be struggling up hill!

so far short list of
Golf TDi (although high millage!)
Mondeo TDCi (again high millage!)
Leon TDi (top end of budget)

what do any of you run?and how are they?

I'm also contemplating a cheap reliable diesel run-around. Thing is, they aren't always cheap to buy. Likely to be a German diesel for me

Ive got a 04 plate MG ZR TD as a run around, i hammer it 200 miles a week across rural country roads and i get no less than 44mpg, not bad really. cheap insurance, cheap tax. I cant fault it.

Would Have too suggest at your budget a 406 or a mondeo, they are probably the most reliable you'll get at that money, taxi driver beside us has a 406 with 450k miles on it and it never misses a beat.

pug 306 D turbo. cheap and chearfull and the engine is all mechanical so less to go wrong.

Ive seen really good examples of these for 1k and dogs for about £200. No one seems to want them because they were superceeded by the hdi models.

Another example - BMW 320D - My manager used to have one - sold for about 2k ish with high mileage. He claimed the car did 800 miles per tank......
