AE86 info

Right found an AE86 near me for a really good price.

Anyone know what to look for when buying, where they rust/ hold water etc.

It has 51000km its black over grey but has been resprayed as the engine bay is white.

Seems to have some watanabe or similar alloys and have noticed adjustable rear dampers and it looks quite low.

I have said im going back for another look when the snow has melted as it was ice on the body work so didn't want to scratch the paint work trying to get it off, and when i go back the company is willing to get it up on the ramp so i can have a look underneath but he has assured me it is solid and has passed MOT needing 1 tyre and it's a fresh import.

So any info would be awesome and also where are the AE86 websites as info is hard to find on driftworks.

if its a fresh import and hasnt had any major repair work then rust should be very minimal.

obviously have a good look but rust is in most places hat other cars rust, arches, sills, any seams, water can collect in the spare wheel well and the drivers and passenger side footwell. also check round window rubbers and where the bumpers touch the bodywork, its an older car so is likely to have a bit of corrosion, especially if its at the cheaper end of the price range.

if its been resprayed check for poor repairs using lots of filler or suchlike!

ae86irl.com lads there know there stuff but you need a ae86 to join. Have a look underneath rust is the main issue with them. After that nothing really to worrie about eventhing can be replaced. If you get one make sure to underseal the car or it will rot away in from of your eyes (i no ye use a lot of salt over there on the roads).

check the rear pockets they always go there (look up underneath the sides of the rear bumper) check inner sills when you open the doors. inner wings under the bonnet (manifold side especially as the heat tends to flake the paint off there and they start rusting) and obviously all the usual places you would check.

Well i checked under the bonnet and looked perfect, checked behind the fuel filler cap and was mint under the spare wheel was mint.....just trying to think of other bits...

The spare wheel made me wet forgot what the make was but was dished and stretched tyre haha

The paintwork looks mint but need a better look when the snow has thawed out, i know that aint the most important thing but it really does seem a minter from what i could see underneath the arms were mint.

Just need to arrange to go down in the week when they got the ramp clear to get a look underneath as i really want it aswell as the starlet :)

got any pictures?

I've got one coming for japan at the moment adn can't wait lol.

Look inside the boot lid, under the trims as thats a common place for rust to start, most places have already been mentioned though. One of the main reasons I didn't buy from the u.k is because a lot of cars are rusty somewhat but then again there are plenty of rusty ones in japan.

Oooooo the bloke has told me to call him in the week to arrange to get it started as it wouldn't start today battery gone, and he will let me drive it and get it on the ramp for me so i can have a look at it from underneath, if he will take that much then i might offer him that :p

For that price something is way wrong i would say, however look the car over very closely and if it seems gd then u might just get a serious bargain:freddy:

that is very true.

Most people know these are worth a fair bit and garages more so.

Get some pictures up as someone may know the car/history.

check the following very carefully,

rear chassis legs
rear panal where it means boot floor
boot to 1/4 closing panal
out 1/4 panals
inner 1/4 panals
sills
front chassis legs esp p/s where the manifold is very close to
front panal
both innet front arches
check all the runner round the windows( to replace a clean fortune)
engines arnt bullet proof no matter what people lead you to belive they blow up just like any other car.
gear box make sure its goes into 1st and 2nd smoothly
make sure the diff locks both ways so hoop it right then left
make sure theres no smoke on over run ...sign of worn out rings

one thing i will say yes they are good fun tho they now getting dear to replace parts on,before you buy you should price up a few bits from toyota like sideskirts and 1/4 panals

How will anyone on here know the history it's a fresh import?

I just thought of something, can a car be MOT'd before it's SVA'd or registered. As he told me it's got full MOT but it's yet to be registered or SVA'd

lol stupid me but still I want to see pics.

MOT needs to be done before you go to dvla to register it which can take 2 weeks+ after giving in docs i think.
