battery draining

well im having a problem with the battery going flat within a fewdays of charging. at first i taught i had a old battery and got a new one as it couldnt hurt to have a new one. but its draining the new one now aswell. i tried doing a test made sure all light were off ect doors closed took out the interior light and still same prob. now i had a fair idea if it was draining a new batt in a day or so its bigger than that but i had to check

any ideas even where to start or the best way to go about finding it? im stumped on what it could be

i know not many ppl do in gt's & v's but do you have an amp or active sub?? any shorts over the battery terminals from possibly water or unsheathed wires?? could check your turbo timer if you have one is not stuck on too i guess although that would be strange.

well man no dont have a sound system anyway and when i put the new battery in i sanded down the terminals ect and cleaned it all up. there is nothing else coming from the battery on whats ment to be ect. im going to just have to pull fuses maybe and leave it overnight and see if i can isolate the problem. its a big mystery tho as it only started when i first got her home and into the garage ever since then she wont hold a charge

its a pain haha more bull that i really dont need

Nope. Will be fine.

Got a clamp meter? Can clamp the live terminal of the battery and see if there is any load been pulled (will measure the amps in the cable) and pull fuses one at a time and see if the load decreases etc :)

yeah have one there im going to trace back some steps before this all happened and see what the storie is i must have done something or other as it doesnt just happen if you get me. something strange tho today it started on the button with no signs of it being flat at all i will give a few things ago and see what happens. its a pain tho as i wont know if i fixed the prob until the batt goes flat again

Yeah, I'd put a clamp meter on before you do anything. See if there is any load been drawn or if its just the battery

Aw what! That's so unfair :( I'm back on the ball today after my epic brain fart last night lol!

haha its telling me that i need to rep others before i rep you but the last time i gave you rep was ages ago its the same with john-boi i can give him rep for info because i gave him some before ect. so basically if you were on helping me the hole time i can only rep you the once? seems abit stupid in fairness

Whats the voltage across the battery when its running?
If its draining a new battery within a few days, it points to it not being charged, ie: the alternator

well i dont think its that man as i charged it last week put it in the car started ect no probs had it on for about 10 mins ans switched it off. turned it quick over after turning it off and on again to make sure it still had power with no probs. went to start it a few days after with no joy. power there alright but not enough to start it you know that dull lights and stuff

im out messing around with it now but cant seem to find my multi meter haha i found one lead off it its around somewhere

Well when running you should be getting 14.4volts across the terminals. :)

You could also disconnect the battery, and get a resistor and connect it across the battery terminals and (I can't think of the exact formula off the top of my head. I'll look it up later)

And then measure how long it takes for the battery to go dead.

I.E. A 30ah battery, can run 30amps for an hour. So if you put a resistor across that would draw 1amp, it should run that for 30 hours.

I reckon it might be a sticky relay/switch somewhere. The switch is sticking and activating the coil on a relay, but nothing is working as the ignition is not turned on,

So the coil on the relay could be drawing the power, but you won't see anything left on as the power that the relay is switching isn't on.

You really need to get a clamp meter on it to see if there is any draw while its turned off so we know where to look

Get a multimeter and check the voltage when running no load and then with a load on like headlights and rear heater if the voltage is dropping then the alternator is not holding charge and is nackered.

He means the battery is not holding charge.

Or could be the alternator is not charging the battery.
