blue smoke.

hi, have recently rebuilt the top end of my car. took the head off as the gasket was faulty.

whilst its been apart i have replaced the valve stem seals.

also i have has the head gas flowed, put and aftermarket manifold and decat on and a trd rocker cover- so better breather system aswell.

before i was running a standard mani and decat.

so, reassembled and on start up i allowed it to run up and noticed a small amount of blue smoke but i put this down to the build as i oiled the valves when putting them in. this smoke then soon cleared and i gave it a road test and all seemed fine.

i allowed everything to cool down and decided to give it another run. i didnt notice any smoke whilst driving/boosting but when i stopped and then pulled away at a junction i noticed a puff of blue smoke.

gradually this smoke is getting worse, BUT only on idle. if i blip the car at a stand still i get a big plume of blue smoke.

there is no smoke when driving/boosting, only idle.

i did notice a slight bit of play in my turbo when it was apart but thought nothing of it.

im running a standard ct9 which has prob been to the moon and back lol and i was wondering since i have done all the head work and put a more free flowing mani and decat on its caused the turbo to 'shit itself' ?!

was reading this thread and sounds to be my problem?

any ideas? thanks.

Could well be buddy as after fitting a decat the loss of back pressure tends to cause an old ct9 to crap itself time for a hybrid.

Probably your turbo its on the way out mate.
Since you have a smoke prob only at idle you may notice nothing when you open the decat as owen said, but still your turbo can be the prob.

You say u had a decat before aswell or do you mean you had the standard cat in the exhaust?? I have the exact same problem just changed the valve seals but still smoking so i took of the decat and no oil...but got a mates CT9 smoke was gone!! trying 2get a tongs hybrid now

right, have put another standard ct9 on. started up, no smoke at all. gave it a gentle drive, returned and on idle still no smoke.

gave it a bit of a hard drive for half hour and still no smoke so i assumed this had cured the problem.

this evening i drove about 30 miles, without flooring it and at every junction, set of lights etc i checked for smoke and there was none at all.

however, i decided to boot it for about 5 mins or so, and when i next pulled up i noticed it start to smoke again  i gave it a blip and it plumed out blue smoke again.

i then drove it gently for another 10 mins or so and when i next pulled up there was nothin??

is it possible i have done the seals on this turbo also??

i brought the turbo second hand and it was stated the turbo smoked ever so slightly but nothin major so i decided to try it as i couldnt find another reasonably priced ct9.

basically the reason i brought a 2nd hand turbo is that i wanted to be sure that the turbo was at fault and nothing else.

i hope this is the case because if it is i am happy to upgrade to a hybrid but dnt wonna fork out if its not!

as i posted before i have had my head gas flowed, aftermarket mani and decat and i have been told this could be the cause of my turbo seals leakin on tick-over after a hard drive??

rep will be added for helpfull info.

thanks guys :)

Sounds like your replacement turbo seals have gone too. Have you done a compression test? Would be worth while for the sake of £20 from halfords pal

Is it just me or does it kinda seem backwards to buy a smoking turbo to rule out if it is indeed your turbo that is causing the smoke. To me it seems like its gonna smoke either way.

The only thing I can think of is you are not priming the turbo and engine correctly. But if you are priming correctly then check the intercooler piping. There is oil in the intercooler and piping 90% of the time the turbo seals go out. Just keep driving it and I promise you will notice oil in the piping if its the turbo seals.

Thats all I can think of right now.

id do a compression test as said above to rule out piston rings mate.. if its not that its your turbo seals.. make sure the turbo is getting oil and make sure you prime it as said above before you drive it at all.. if the exhaust turbine is black you will know its oil seals that side and if you take off turbo 2 intercooler pipe and theres alot of oil there you will know its oil seals that side

Correct each side has its own seal and you can actually pin point which seal is bad.
