is it possible for the cat to overheat with no thermostat in, i know how one basically works, but my engine is overheating under load and my temp gague seems to jump up and down a bit ect

Check the coolant temp sender on the thermostat housing make sure its plugged in properly and the wire isnt corroded, with no thermostat in it shouldn't overheat just take a long time to warm up. also try bleeding the system

No thermostat means water is constantly circulaiting...If anything would cause it to run cooler for longer until up to temp not hot

seems you're having an overheating problem caused by a blocked radiator, faulty fan or blown head gasket. what exactly do you mean by saying ur gauge seems to jump up n down? if its a sudden jumping then either your wire from the thermostat is loose or its getting earthed at some place.

There are a lot of cars out there that WILL overheat with no thermostat in.
I do not have personal experience with 4E but no thermostat could cause it to overheat.
The water goes to fast through the radiator and thus there is not enough time to cool down.

It just seems to spike up sometimes and then over heat sometimes when I drive it hard then other times it does not over heat when flooring it

Does it steam out of the rad cap and when switching it of when "overheating" can you hear the water boiling inside the engine?
Do you have coolant in your water system? And has the car been without coolant for a long time?

no thermostat can cause overheating as the water in the system is flowing too fast and not picking up the heat and moving it as it should ,so some areas of the engine will be hotter than others.

i dont think removing the thermostat will cause overheating. it is only there to raise block temp to optimal temp for ideal combustion before it gets opened by pressure. when its open, water flows the same speed all around the block and radiator. only now the water is allowed to circulate so that it can reach the radiator and cool down before coming back into the block. when the temp goes lower than optimal and pressure drops, the thermostat closes and water is circulating in the block only until it heats up again..

Some engines will explode on you without a thermostat... no joking.
A 2E does go above normal temp without a thermostat so a 4E stands a good chance to do the same.
