so the car has been parked up close to a year without being started, got a new battery today and just threw it in a minute ago to see would it start up but i got nothing? gonna assess tomorrow when its not so miserable. might it just be the battery terminal connections there a little bit corroded? or should i be looking more at leads an plugs? theres no noise at all when i turn the key except one small tick and no lights on dash or anything like that. thanks...

I also hope that you're priming the motor before actually starting it aswell ? Don't just crank a motor that's been sitting there for a year!

check the alternator connections, specifically the plug connection. also check all your fuses

Are you getting any lights on the dash, oil and battery red lights? If you are hearing 1 tick when you try to start the car, it could be its the starter relay you are hearing. The relay could be energising but the contacts are not making, not giving any power to the battery. Best way to check these things is with a multi meter, but try taking the starter relay out and making sure its not damp inside for a start. Also you could have a stuck starter, put the car in gear and with the handbrake off, roll it forward a little to try and shake the starter, also worth trying to bump start it, but as the man says above, its best to remove the king lead, injector plugs and turn it over on the starter to get some oil pressure first.
