Castle combe track day today = Blown engine! lol but loads of fun!

Went to the Castle combe the action day today and the car was performing shit hot!, however towards the end of the day on my last session, i lost partial power at the end of the straight, doing 110+ at the time.

Then all of a sudden tons of smoke in the cockpit and loads behind me, was like ohh shit!

Opened the windows to breath and realised it wasnt coming from the exhaust but the engine bay! Managed to limp back to the pits, opened the bonnet and to my amazement, the entire engine bay was covered in oil.

No pipes had come off it had all sprayed through the oil breather ontop of the rocker cover.

It would start but was only running on 3 cylinders, tested it with a compression tester and there was no compression at all in cylinder no.1. However with the plug out you could feel it compressing the air out of the cylinder, spark plug back in and it was coming out the breathers, pumping all the oil out.

What possible causes would do this, i have no abnormal noises from the engine, apart from no compression in cylinder 1, all my coolant is still there, no oil in the coolant tank and it didnt over heat either.

I have been told it could be a dropped valve (but this would surely make a horrible noise), possibly head gasket, even though i just changed this last week!

Any other suggestions, or has this happened to anyone else?

First of all gutted for you mate!!!

And that the exact symtpons I have!!

Was racing a WRX when mine went but not in so spectacular fashion!

Sounds like either rings on cylinder 1 or a melted/ cracked piston

Amazing day and crackin car, was blinding around the track the time, loved it till it went pop!

I had thought about a cracked piston or knackered rings, but this wouldnt explain why my compression from cylinder 1 is leaking into my oil system, hence it shooting out my breather pipes.

You can actually see the compression strokes making puffs of vapour out my breather pipes when you take them off.

I thought it could be head gasket but then all my coolant is there still, hmm wont know till i get the bloody head off again.

Theres definitely pressure in the crankcase then mine smoked from the dipstick when removed.

With ring/piston failure the oil will pass the piston and therefore come out of the breathers.

How was the weather for you anyway? You happy with the manifold and decat?

yeah weather was spot on :) and yes was happy with the mani and decat, fitted it the other day!

Piss sed off that this has happened now! I am slightly tempted at the prospect of just dumping in a forged lump for £1800 and i wont have to worry about reliability issues any more then

Hi mate its Paul, not good news then!

Sounds like either a piston ringland has cracked or the piston has been damaged, any compression is then leaking past the rings/piston into the sump and then throwing it out of the breathers.

It happened to my Punto a few times, normally after getting driven hard for long periods when it was very warm

Picture of the piston from my Punto....
