Check Engine Light & Smoke

OK so got the car back last Saturday (16.04.2011) drove it home it was fine apart from the steering being hard to turn because the steering pump wasnt connected.

Well the pump was installed yesterday the steering is good...let the car warm up a bit then rev it a little and it started smoking a kinda bluish black or something but only when I rev it enough for the turbo to start spooling. On idle and on low revs it doesnt smoke(turbo seals maybe???)

After revving it the engine check light came on so i turned of the car ran a diagnostic and it came back it CODE: 13 & 52

I looked up what the codes mean...how do deal with them?? Any pointers?? Especially with code 13 how badly can that affect the car

I don't know what the codes are but it could be the PCV valve seeing as you said it only does it when you rev it and it's about to come on boost.

ok i found out was causing code 52...knock sensor wire was cut and rejoined without insulation so that was causing a short. that's sorted, now i need to know how to remedy code 13...do i need to replace the dizzy or adjust it?

@omcr: before you decide to replace the dizzy, take it out and check that it's clean/moisture-free and that all the leads are properly in place. you can also check your igniter. does the engine falter when ticking over..? kinda like a hesitating idle..?

over time, (carbon) deposits build up on the dizzy contacts - both inside and on the exterior where the leads connect to it. you may want to take it out and just check it out as previously mentioned. it may also help to take a wire brush or a soft file to it to make sure the contact surface are nice and clean.. :)
let us know how that goes.
remember, we are still at the troubleshooting stage so until we have all the symptoms, we may not hit the problem spot on..

spark plugs

when replacing the spark plugs, ensure that you get plugs with the correct heat-range. i'd say the 4e-fte engine runs best with plugs of heat-range 6 or 7..? i run mine on bkr6e plugs and they do a good job so can't complain..

@omcr: good one mate. hope you gapped the plugs before fitting them. if you didn't it's ok. most come pre-gapped and are reliable enough..

Where is the smoke coming from, the exhaust or out the back of the car? If its just seen from inside the car when driving or under the bonnet then it may be the power steering hose is leaking oil onto the mani when the revs go up.
