connecting xbox live via a usb modem and laptop

hi guys. im going crazy here. im trying to set up xbox live for a mate on his 360. ive done it in the past on his old vodafone usb modem. im now trying it through a 3 mobile usb.. ive searched the net and tryed about 20 different ways ive found none of which worked.last time i did it it took about 2 mins.... anyone know how to do it? please help lol
