cracked head near manifold

Hi,

Just recently I noticed what sounded like an exhaust blowing sound coming from the car which was most noticeable from a cold start, after closer inspection I found this....

cracked_head_1

cracked_head_2

cracked_head_3

cracked_head_4

The car still drives ok and doesn't seem to be affected other then the blowing noise, I'm I ok to still drive it while I get it fixed?

I take it I'm looking at a new head? I take it this couldn't be repaired? Could any other damage have occured due to this?

Thanks for any help

Hi,

thanks I've put up a post in the wanted forum.

Do you know what do these usually go for?

Will I be ok to drive the car until I can get it sorted?

thanks

The dreaded fourth runner crack,it can be fixed. You can drive your car for a long time.I did and it was for over 3 months or so.
I got it fixed and its fine now.
Hope you have a flexi part in your exhaust and a braced decat.
Hope this helps.

cheers guys, I have an service and mot coming early August, so if it's ok to drive it for a short while I'll get it sorted while it's in for that.

typical I've only just had my manifold replaced as my japspeed one had cracked.

cars, love em when they work, hate them when they brake or need fixing!!!

im guessing your car is the glanza in your pic? it seems more common for this to happen on glanzas from what ive seen for some reason.

yeah i really dont understand that, it is allways glanza's, is there a different brace on the turbo area on the glanza or gt? what could possibly affect that? i thought the head were near identical

i've seen it happen on gts also

some people say it happens from over tightening/torquing the manifold nuts

it can be repaired....no need to a used head unless something is wrong with yours

but some people will prefer a 2nd hand head just for piece of mind..though it could still happen to that head still

let me also add my massive crack to the hall of crack fame.. :) i'm just wondering;
a) can i seam-weld it in place, without taking the head off..?
b) if i do take the head off, will i have to skim it after the weld..?
c) what causes this kinda crack on this engine..? can it be avoided..?
d) anyone know how best to weld this..? since it's aluminium i'm guessing it will need a lot of tlc..?

this happens nearly all these engines including mine but i used liquid weld before it got any worse... the worse thing about this is the crack extends into the exhaust port nearly every time making welding a total pain.. what we did on my mates car was (his snapped off altogether).. we had to take off the head and used liguid weld to bond it back on then got someone with a TIG welder to weld the top.. then we braced that stud to the empty bolt hole just above that stud for extra strenght..

sounds like v good advice.. :)
will wait it out and weld it when doing major service, rings, gaskets etc.. for now, it just blows slightly when cold and i don't mind that too much..

its just bad design really... all mani's stock or aftermarket expand and contract with the heat and i think my self over time it weakens this until it cracks... mine never made it into the exhaust port so that why i used liquid weld.. i really dont know how my mates car faired out as he sold it on a few months after but i think i might make a thread for members that dont have this problem yet and show them how to brace it... we used 2 smaller nuts on that stud with the brace in between them, outer nut acted as a lock nut then just bent the brace so it could bolt to that empty bolt hole above that stud.. will be doing mine soon also just incase the liquid weld fails

That happened to my Glanza too, still not had it replaced and only noticed when Jay changed the turbo. Must be factory spec design fault as my mani is OEM.

Still not got it fixed/changed... but it runs fine for now.
