Custom Shims

Hey mate,

We can make custom shims no problem, give us a shout over email to discuss sizes and we can supply them once we re-open. Those shims sound very very thick and could flick out are you sure you need such sizes, what clearances do you have?

T

there is quite a gap i fitted a standard shim (not sure what size) and bucket and got the feeler gauges out and there was about 2.5mm of a gap between the follower and shim.

Could you recommend anything else toby?

As m16chris has mentioned, take the head, assembly and the camshafts to an experienced head specialist if you want to have custom shims made.

Its as simple as that and will cost you the same if not more in the long run than buying the shims yourself and measuring them. The head specialist will make sure the clearances are perfect and will have access to all the precision equipment and will make custom shims for you if necessary.

It cost me under a ton to get a custom reshim on my 5EFHE head with FHE cams, I needed to have the work done because I just had major port and polish and valve work done to the head meaning the valve clearances will be different.

Il be going nowhere near steven gault! But thanks anyway!!

I have left the head with a specialist but he had asked me if i could get shims think enough for him to machine down.

Looks like il be going down the solid bucket route out of the yaris at this point.

If anyone else can think of anything let me no. lol

I'm haveing the same trouble with my custom cams. I have a huge gap and do NOT want to chance custom shims.

I would like to know if I understood this post correct. You can take a Yaris shimless bucket and place the correct size shim "under" the bucket to suit your own application.

I have a gap of 1.855mm inbetween the follower and shim. Currently the bucket is 5.44mm. So if I go to the largest Yaris bucket of 5.68mm that is a difference of .24mm. My cam spec sheet says to use .2mm valve lash. 1.855mm gap minus .2mm lash gives you 1.655mm minus the .24mm difference leaves me with 1.415mm shim required. So if I machined a shim down to that could it be placed under the bucket?? I would think a shim that thin would possible bend or crack??

IF I went with a custom shims, and I added that 1.655mm to the current 3mm shim I would guess that a 4.655mm shim would be too big and possible flick out correct?? OR is this acceptable for a custom shim???

hi there.
saw the thread....very interesting..... I had the same problem...Now i tried using solid lifter from diesel engines. the gap was at 1.8 to 2.5mm. cut off the shims and placed under the bucket. the problem was that the under bucket shim had to be 1.** mm. At 8000rpm the shims breaks-up under the bucket and f*** the head up.....

Now had to go back to the drawing board....... I do wish someone on the site was successful enough and share with us his experience on that matter.

I have one extra head with 4A-GE valves... Newer been used yet.. needs to couple things machined..

Meanwhile I Ordered now from "SI valves" Stainles steel valves and ask to make them little longer than oem.. So the shim can be thinner :]

can u shim yaris buckets from behind? i cant see why not and if so i think that would be the way to go, they will def not flick out! get the biggest yaris bucket and shim a small amount and set it inside the bucket from behind to lift it up to the cam follower!

if no one is with me then never worry lol
