Damaged my engine in an unusal way! - Blue smoke but where from?

Oh here is what happened, (sorry its a bit long)

Car was rebuilt and running sweet with a nice engine i had just put in but i noticed it was leaking badly from the turbo oil return pipe. The gasket was shot so decided to replace it, while i was working on it i had masked off the oil return pipe on the turbo so no shit got in there, but in a rush while putting it back together i forgot to take the bloody tape off!!

As you can imagine i got 100 metres down the road and then all of a sudden a MASSIVE plume of smoke came out of the car like a smoke screen, and i dont mean just a bit, LOADS and LOADS!! i realised what i had done straight away and got the car back to my drive. (still cant bloody believe it!!)

My car had drank over a litre of oil in 500metres of driving and it was bubbling out of my exhaust!!

I had thought the oil seal had blowin in a big way on the turbo and the oil had just poured straight into the exhaust instead of the oil return pipe as it was blocked.

I have put a new turbo on yesterday and it has stopped smoking, but now it smokes badly when on boost and when you rev it when its been stood idle for a while.

Is this the oil in the exhuast still or have i knackered somthing in the engine with the oil back pressure caused by the blockage??

There is no oil at all in the intercooler pipework

Here is a video when you rev it,

Here are the colour of my plugs, nice tan colour

and here are my compression results

Pot 1 - 184
Pot 2 - 187
Pot 3 - 186
Pot 4 - 189

I need some advice on problems that can be causing this oily blue smoke, engine was mint before this cock up!!

Thanks

Craig

Make absolutelly sure that the oil return path is creating a more than 90-100 degrees angle because if less than that the oil pools and gets forced to exit from anywhere it can! Also check the inner diameter of the oil feed bolt on the turbo to be correct for your turbo because this can also cause oil leakage.

If its had over a litre of oil down the exhaust then I would imagine there is still a lot held up the silencer(s) etc... which will be what your seeing at the moment.

I'd try and get the exhaust off and somehow clear some of the oil out of it, see if that improves things.

EDIT: Compression test figures are very strong btw!

This is what im hoping, i just checked the rear silencer and its still soaking in oil and thats at the back of the system, so i can imagine the there is loads in the silencer. I have taken it for a bit of a run down the motorway but its still smoking, especially when your boot it on boost you get thick cloud of it!

But like you said, burning off over a litre of oil in the exhaust could take ages, car runs and drives normally otherwise. I am going to take off the new turbo and check to see if its gone black and sooty exhuast side to see if its still burning oil before the exhuast system.

Just take the downpipe off and check the turbo for oil, if all is good there, I would just keep running the car and keep checking the oil level :)

just oil in the exhaust id say.. the old turbo redened and poured oil down the exhaust via the seal.. only smokes on boost cause the heat is greater down the exhaust cause of the decat that im sure you have judging by the sound of your car.. a good long motorway journey will get rid of it

I have disconnected the exhuast system at the decat to be sure, it sounds burbly and horrible but a quick drive up the road should confirm if its smoking still from the engine or indeed its old oil in the exhuast :)

I really hope its the bloody latter!

Problem Solved!! Thank fook

Took the exhaust system off and ran with just the decat pipe, no smoke at all, put exhuast back on on tons of it!! Seems your right, all that oil is jammed up in my silencer, over a litre and its that burning.

Drove it long and hard tonight and the smoke is finally starting to reduce, although its still like a bloody smoke screen and you get some strange looks lol, but its definetly getting better.

GOOD TIMES!!!

Can you or someone else explain that for me as I didn't get it? better if with a picture or 2?

Well i thought he was on about the oil return pipe, mine is a TD04 turbo and you need to rotate it, so you also need to make sure the oil feed is pointing straight down. I guess thats what he meant?!?

All good anyway!
