open or short circut in coolant temp. sensor signal (thw)?? do i need a new temp sensor and do i need to change the thermostat?

check the sensor first, its also possible that you have a bad earth on the same circuit.

where would the earth be? i dont have a mulitmeter so would i be best off changing the sensor anyway for to be on the safe side

well there are 2 main earth blocks... one is 4 brown wires which is usually found attached to the plenum.. and hte other earthing block is found beind the passenger headlamp, usually behind the indicator attached to the mud-guard.
