Engine rebuild

ok fellas weekend gone there i finally installed my forged internals from speedvision. Quick question though, is it normal that after doing a complete rebuild that the car smokes a bit of blue smoke? its not doing it on idle but when u do a small press and release and on compression. Do i have to burn it out by putting some milage on the clock?

Would like to get any and all suggestions.

not strictly true actually gilly,

some forge engines do use more oil than usual engines as they need to heat up and expand to properly fill the bores

how many miles have you done so far on the motor? I would expect some oil to be used but not loads

Also depends on what clearances your engine has been built to etc etc...

could be valve stem oil seals if its on overun. if the head has been off for a little while and the seals have dried out then they may now be knackered. unless you replaced them of course ;)

I changed valve stem seals during the rebuild. I put like 500 km so far on it and i also plan to do some long driving this weekend. I used back stock sized ross forged pistons bored to 74 mm with scat rods bore. I didn't change my PCV valve but i just bought a new one so will try and see what happen when i put it in but in the event that it still continues to smoke what else can be suggested? I definately used oil to lubricate some parts when doing the rebuild but not loads lol.

its a fearly new turbo have not been through world wars and compression check is ok there is no oil spitting up through the rocker cover neither there is any pressure escaping through the breather filter.

is ur oil pump ok? did u check to see what oil pressure u have?

did u gap the rings propperly?

did u clean the turbo feed & return lines? as due to idleness they could have blocked up...

did u change the spark plug seals whilst the head was off? (big brown seals under the top cover)..

the pcv could be the problem..

hows water pressure? are u sure u didnt swap the 2 water & vacum lines off the throttle body? as it may cause the car to smoke...

well off the top of my head that seems to be the list

didn't check the oil pressure, will have to get that checked.

yes i did gap the rings properly.

yes i inspected the turbo when i took it off, both the oil feed and drain lines and they were fine.

yep i changed all 4 of the spark plug seals that does be attached to the rocker cover.

as i said i just bought a PCV valve and will change it this afternoon and let u guyz know whats the outcome.

this can happen for a short while after a rebuild with OEM parts.....till everything seats in properly---rings, seals, etc..........plus there is usually a bit of excess oil in the bores, cylinders, etc which may just burn off.........HOWEVER,,,,,,,,,,this should gradually clear up after a few miles (maybe 20km most)

i am not sure if this is the same with forged parts

500km is about what 300 miles? which is fair few but i would run it in more to see it if clears up maybe 500-750 miles and see what happens.

ok fellas well i plan to do some island trips saturday and sunday. Thanks much for the assistance. Will keep your guyz posted as to what happen. Also i am using 10w-30 to break it in, could it be that the oil thin and seaping in somewhere? Cause i plan to run quaker state synthic blend after which is a bit thicker to quiet down the engine abit.

well i realise u are from grenada...and i know plenty caribbean guys use either 10-40 or 20-50 due to our relatively hot climate

10-30 will tend to burn off a bit faster in comparison to the heavier 20-50 which seems to be much preferred here in Barbados------based on discussions with local starlet/glanza owners

a minority seem to use 10-40 and the odd person uses 10-30 (just watch your oil level)---from my talks

ok kool i was just using that to break it in cause it was suggested but will turn to 20w-50 quaker state semi synthetic afterwards. thanks much for the info and yes i always watching the oil level everytime i look to go drive.
