EP85 Viscous Coupling

Great write up :) I don't really have anything more to add to that, it's pretty straightforward.

I've got the old shaft here and my intention is to disassemble as much as possible and then carefully open up the sealed portion of the viscous coupling to see if I can do anything along the lines of a rebuild kit. If that's not a goer we could try welding it up solid and pulling the front driveshafts and see what she's like rear wheel drive :p

For what it's worth I was pretty impressed with the 4wd hardware in the EP85, in comparison to the other 4wd cars like the Civic or Mazda demio etc the Toyota gear is hugely overbuilt. For a car originally designed for getting Japanese housewives up their snowy driveways I think it has real performance potential.

its like a viscous lsd. fluid passes through holes or vanes, this causes the slip. when the rotational force reaches a certain point the fluid gets to a point where it cannot pass through the holes or vanes fast enough and then begins to drive the output side of the coupling.

there are a few rightups on it, its used very often in 4wd cars, but not often with a seperate viscous coupling like the starlets. the landrover freelander uses a similar setup to this.

thanks for the rightup nzep85, looks like a simple job to sort out.

yours looks like it has leaked about the same as mine ;)

just a shame the weather in the uk isnt as nice as it is where you are :(

got all mine back together today.
cut the exhaust mounting bracket off and welded it the other side so it fits as it should. had to get my uj's changed as they were knackered too. all fitted a treat and seems to be fine. gave it a quick drive down the road and all the noises have gone. just have a slight rattle sound from the gearbox when the clutch is up an in neutral!?!?

bit of a costly problem, but at least its all done now!

Good work. which uj's did you use? or did you just order them from Mr T?

they are staked in so not easy if youve never done them before and dont have the equipment. i just took them to an engineering place near me. cost £190 for all 4 fitted.

changed all the oils today too so now the drivetrain is sorted ;)

that noise your getting is probs the input shaft bearings, as long as its not mega noisy i wouldnt get too worried about it!

thats what my dad reckoned it could be. or a rattle clutch plate.

its not mega noisy. it just runs so quietly as its stock that you hear these little things.
