exhaust noise

I was driving out of a local town yesterday and met a checkpoint, the guard was checking for tax ect... when i pulled up he checked my particulars and said ok pull in there and turn off the car. i pulled in and got out and said what the problem?

He first went on about why my tax is out of date! i said have another look at the tax disc as it had another 2 months left on it! he said oh right i must have read it wrong.

I thought that was that and i walked back to the drivers side of the car when he stopped me and said start up the car, i started it and he went on and on about exhaust noise and noise pollution and said you have to get it changed.

He then took down all my details and told me ill be getting a summons in the post and will have to appear in court beacuse of the noise of my exhaust!!

I think the law states that an exhaust cant be louder then 99 db, but he never tested it so where do i stand with this?

Thanks
John

The actual law states that the exhaust may not be beyond a reasonable noise level, reasonable deemed by the garda in question.
Ridiculas but makes no difference.
The same law states that thee only good defense is that you damaged your exhaust on your trip.

I'd get it changed to please him,or get a silencer. You've no legs to stand on unfortunetly.

it was a different exhaust for nct.

so even if its below 99db you can still get done for it! this country is a joke!
ill add a silencer to it and see if it makes any difference, what pisses me off is ive been stopped loads of times and nothing has ever been said about the noise of the exhaust!

The actual law itself
Silencer
(1) Every vehicle propelled by an internal combustion engine shall, subject to the provisions of sub-article (2) of this article, be fitted with an exhaust silencer or other device suitable and sufficient for reducing to a reasonable level the noise caused by the escape of exhaust gases from the engine.

I had it happen to me but mine just had the mot done and they took mine stuff down and didn't hear nutin when you have a mot they fail you if its to loud anyway

its happens here in the uk to :( the ammount of time ive been pulled over in all types of jap cars with exhaust systems on and some dnt say anything and some do! i got pulled 5times in one night for my old pulsar exhaust lol and the done a db check and it was miles over something like 109 at 3k revs and even then i didnt get fined just warned but threaten with a £60 fine and if caught again the car would be taken and crushed

i had a k10 box shape micra and it had a straight through pipe and a gaurd stopped me and said "richard do you realise when you start your car, you can be heard all over town" and as he said all over he made a kinda sweeping motion with his two hands, after this he said do you have everything on the car i replyed yes and he drove off lmao legend he drives a subaru legacy, but any way my micra passed the nct with this on i put on a back box and only a few days later got stopped and the gaurd told me i was getting a summons for the exhaust wtf i went from a piece pipe to a s/s box which quietend it alot in comparison

The cat make such a big difference on the same Exhaust!!! My mate fitted an HKS on his decat car and I've got an HKS with a cat - and the difference is about 50% - the decat has a lot more noise! Yes they can stop you and if it's too noisy you might have serous problems!

they do it all the time here (clare) on a daily basis.. ruthless fuckers.. there a set fine for such cases as the car wasnt tested for noise levels.. pleed with the gard on the day of the court case, thats all you can do, otherwise bend over and recieve yet another way for this country to take money off ya... if you fight it the fine will be bigger.. its a no win no win situation im afraid once that summons comes in the door... another thing to do for the irish members is to say when your stopped that you will change your exhaust and show it to the gard in question before the week is out.. this only works sometimes tho and its "always" down to the gard in question... bunch of knackers!!!!!

Yeah i agree, try meet the gard outside before you go in and say that youll change it by the week is out as above, i was was brought to court in naas for not paying a fine i got, i told the gard had lost work and was struggling to pay it at the time and i could have it that day and he was sound about it depends on the gard i have to say!! sounds like you got someone who has that same frame of mind and will never change about so called "BOY RACERS" that were all little 17yr olds in puntos with poxy neons big bore exhausts which do nothing only try kill other people in them cause they think there colin mcrae down Back roads... There is a difference... Were enthusiast's!!!!

I have thought of raising the note for saftey reasons. I dont know if that helps but my sera is quiet low as is a starlet.
I have had a larger car throw a u turn in front of me at considerable speed not seeing me in the rear view. I've been told best thing to do is increase my exhaust note so those higher vehicles can hear that I'm behind them.
