gear problem

right guys, i was driving today and when i changed gear from 1st into second, it felt as though the gear leaver wasnt going straight into the gear it sort of crunched and then grinded then went into gear. A bit hard to explain, bit like if sometimes i put the car in reverse it catches a moving ring

any ideas what this could be?hope i dont need a new box
