Handbrake adjustment issues

Hello all...

When i'm on a slope, and activate my handbrake, the car would slightly move, depending on how steep the slope is...When i park the car on a flat area, activate the handbrake, jack it up, and try to spin the rear wheels, i notice that the one on the right-hand side would spin a little, whilst the other one doesn't...

So, what could be the issue here:

- does my caliper need a rebuild?
- does my handbrake cables need adjustment?
- does my handbrake cables need to be replaced?

thanks in advance,

cheers:)

you cannot adjust the cables separately. i would start by changing the cables if they look a little scabby. if that doesnt solve it then it will be the caliper i am afraid.

i have had a similar problem with my fiat, i have replaced everything with brand new parts and one side always seems to pull up tighter than the other. i dont know what else to try tbh. however, starlets are better made than my crappy fiat anyway ;)

oh alright then mate, i'll look for a handbrake cable and then i'll replace it...if it still persist, i think i better take the calipers of, and rebuild the whole thing...

Cheers :)

As Duncan says above the rear cables can stretch or seize once they get on down the years which means one or both can cause hand brake issues. Replacement is usually the best policy but if you think they both just need a tighten up you can do this by finding where the front cable secures to the handbrake. This should be a threaded bar that sits on the passengers side of the handbrake.

There should be two 10mm bolts, one is the adjustment and the other is used to lock it in position. REMOVE the top locking bolt completely then tighten the bottom bolt as required. Ensure the rear brakes are not binding as a result of being too tight. Then you can refit the top bolt. If you try tightening both together the threaded bar can shear off.
