im trying to fit my new cv boot because my old one ripped, ive bought a cone that you slide the boot over the cv joint with but i cant get the boot all the way over it.

anyone any advice on the easiest way to do it?

the best way i found to change the boots was to tap the joint off, then put the boot on. then get a cabletie and tie the circlip on the shaft where the splines is (this closes the circlip making easier to put the joint back on). line up the splines on the joint onto the shaft and slowly tap the the joint back in and i should be all good.

i hope this will help mate

What i do when using a cone is to turn the boot inside out and oil up the cone. It should slide up most of the way then just need a bit of force to get it all the way over. Then turn the boot the right way round and clean. What make is the boot as not all cv boots are the "stretchy" type and may need joint taken off to fit.

When they get half way they usually just take a good shove with fingers pushing on the edge of the boot. Can be a bit of a struggle when shaft is on the car. If that dont work then i would say you will have to do as kungfu panda said and pop the joint off, if it wont go over then its either not a stretchy boot or the cone is too big. Unless anyone else has any ideas. There the only 2 ways i know of. Hope this helps.

Thats an option alright.

Is the shaft still in the gearbox? Yeah it will take a decent tap with the hammer to get it off. Just be careful not to hit ABS ring etc, you know yourself. It might pop the shaft out of the box if you hit it too hard so be careful as if it does you will loose small bit of gear oil all over the ground. Its a much easier process with shaft out and sitting in a vice but if you dont have that luxury just give it a few taps and it should come off but i have seen them vertually seize up and not budge unless shaft taken out and hammer the crap out of it. any other questions fire away. Best of luck dude:)

ive managed to get the joint off it was really easy actually.

Now im trying to get it back on but ive managed to get it back on to a point but not sure if its far enough. does it need to go as far back as the grove thats on the driveshaft? ie covering the whole length of the splines because there is still about half an inch of the splines showing.

cheers

yeah it needs to go back on futher the little circlip is more than likely preventing it from goin on the rest of the way. I used a flat head screwdriver to push the circlip into the groove so it can go on the rest of the way ;) hope this helps

its just a bit fiddley man afaik that is the way to do it without damaging the circlip ;) i pushed the joint until it got to the clip then pushed the side with the rest of the clip sticking out in and pushed the joint on the rest of the way.

just did this today too. make sure that the snap ring is not too big, mine opened up a bit when removing it from the shaft. if so just bend it back into shape a bit. if you dont, when you chap on the cv joint it will "hang out" and fuck all the splines on the shaft..........yes im speaking from experience :p
