How do you remove snapped wheel nuts?

Hey everyone

Can someone tell me how do I remove a Locking nut which has snapped off.
I have a puncture so I needed to change my wheel, The first nut I undone was the locking nut and it came straigh off.

Can someone tell me how I can remove it now?. went to a garage and they wanted £108 for 2 hours labour.

Any help would be great. Need the get the wheel off as I have a puncture

Hi Chi, normally i would have said hammer an old socket over what's left of the nut and try and undo it that way but it doesn't look like there is enough left of the nut to do this. Only way i can think of doing it without damaging the alloy is to drill down the center of the studd with ever increasing size of drill bits. But you must get the first hole absolutely central on the stud and keep straight and you will have to replace the stud once your done which may involve stripping the hub.
TBH if the garage is telling you they can do it without damaging the alloy i would be tempted to let them do it for that price.

The way to get that wheel off without risking any damage is to drill a small pilot hole dead in the centre of the stud, and then using several size drill bits open the hole out until the remaining part of the wheel nut comes away. You'll obviously need to replace the wheel stud afterwards, but that's a relatively quick job.

or before all that u could get a hammer and a small chisle, whack a notch in to the nut with the hammer and chisle, then whack that notch anti clock wise if u are lucky it might just undo it for u.

Any idea how much it will cost to replace a stud? and who would do this?

Do you think I can drill a series of holes really clos together and snap a section of the nut off?

before u start drilling try the hammer and chisel, it has worked for me before.

I could have a go at the chisel. Do I need any special chisel? or any is ok?

Also. once I whack a notch into the nut. do I whack the nut anti clockwise with the chisel??
Someone said whack an impact socket on there. which method would be better?

You wont get a socket far enough over by the look of it. It might also be too deep to get at with a chisel but worth a try. Drilling would be the best way. The stud just hits out with a hammer then tap a new one back through.

Hi mate,

The only way to get that out is to drill out the old stud and put another stud back through. Stud part number is 42611E, should be available on ebay or down at Toyota.

Find the center of the stud and drill it out with a small drill bit then increase the size of the drill bit until the stud is pretty much no existant and the nut spins on your drill bit.

Replace stud

Jobs a good en! :)

If your not very handy with tools etc pay the 108quid and get it done by a garage

The wheel studs just hammer out. You could heat the hub abit before so and WD-40 it but they just hammer out. If you look/ or feel around the back of the brake disc 'guard' you will find a wee cut-out semi circle. Line up the broken stud with this and that allows you to remove the stud and refit the new one in the same place.

I definately wouldnt drill them out because there are splines on the end of the stud to stop it spinning. If you drilled it out and fitted a new one when you went to remove your wheel nut the whole thing would spin and not loosen then you really would be in the s***.

I fitted longer studs to my old EP91 so I could use spacers on mx-5 alloys.

How will he get a snapped wheel nut off then if u can drill out the stud?

Theres a reason behind our madness when we say keep dead central :)

You wouldn't drill through the whole length of the stud, that would be pointless! The idea is to drill enough of the stud away so that the broken piece of the wheel nut will just fall off, the remaining part of the stud can be knocked out in the usual fashion once the wheel has been removed.
