how does temp insurance work

how does temporary insurance work? it says cover can be from 1-28days within a 12month period. does this mean for example if i insure a car for 1 day, i can then insure it at a later stage for 27days? or can it only be taking once regardless of how long you opt for?

just curious as picking up a car on sunday and need temp insurance, duno if i should just do the one day or go for the full 28...

incase anyone is interested in the above, nowich union can insure for a max of 84days withing a 12month period on their short term policy. by law they can olny offer it in chunks on 28days however.
