How reliable is your car?

Strange. I heard one tuner said - Exhaust would not make any difference when mapping the car!!!

It's a turbo'd car so it's obviously going to make a difference to a map. Change in exhaust gas flow will make a difference to fueling and spool times, especially since it was a 3sgte engine in dans gt.

Had a couple of ct9s die on me through the years and also had to rebuild the glanza due to my own laziness and not changing the manifold from stock to a better flowing one.

As said tho in stock form they are very reliable little beasts.

I would rate mine as a 2 for now all the time I have been running as 4efe n\a I have never had any problems with the car at all! and thats been about 8 years out of 10 years of ownership. the only problems I have had with mine was running big turbos on a standard 4efte at high boost 1.5+ bar it kept shatting its self at the bottom end and spinning shells. BUT it only did it on the drag strip and I have been told since that it was probably down to the timing on the map. The other time it failed on me was self inflicted too!! it was one of those last minute O I will just sand blast the sump and paint it the day befor santa pod!! HA what a foook up that was! some sand left in sump + oil = mass engine failure and turbo foooked!! but that was all my fault!

I have seen fastphil hydraulic a 4efe, put a rod through the block and then drive it 8 miles or so home! put it in the garage and then start it up to drive it out all with no oil in it lol the do take some killing!!

when i first got my car, i had a problem with the wiring on the fuel pump! went over a bump and it just cut the engine, broke down on many a roundabout
inner CV joint became fucked and that caused me to be towed home and my map sensor went aswell cutting the engine out  not really problems due to neglect iv just been unlucky i spose :(

Made all the difference on my car... My exhaust was tiny extremely restricted as i was using the 2 1/4 inch from the stock set up.. So the day i changed it to a 3 inch side exit with no back box it straight away boosted up from 1.0bar to 1.4 and blew the turbo within the hour literally... Needed a map to control the boost as my boost is all controlled through my ECU...

Changed the turbo and the map was out.. Fensport and YVS performance(the main guys) suggest that the motec gets a remap after every alteration to the engine that is going to effect the amount of air getting... Pain in the arse but its not like you change set ups every week...

Very interesting thread lads!

Thank you for the info about the exhaust! I have an HKS silent power and I plan to reduce the noise - either by using the bung or replacing/adding a silencer! Would that affect my performance?

I'm currently having a nightmare with my exhaust manifold as it keeps blowing the gaskets or cracking, I've changed 3 manifolds and 5 brand new Toyota Gaskets and it still does it, a lot of money spend on absolutely NOTHING as the problem still exist and the last pro mechanic I spoke to quoted me £300 just for taking off the mani, cleaning it properly and putting it back on with 2 gaskets at the same time.

But I'm not paying that kind of money, nor I'm unable to do the job myself as I have no tools and can't even undo the nuts!

adding a silencer or a bung will slightly slow down your gasses exiting so in theory yes it will, will you notice it, i very very much doubt it unless your running big power then creating too much back pressure.

Shame you cannot take the mani off, very simple job and would save you loads. Im guessing your using Stainless Steel manis yeah? I hate them, never got along with them, im gone do my best to keep my Cast. You need to spend alot of money on a mani for it not to blow in my experiences.

were to begin paul...

1st glanza - timing belt broke
2nd glanza - bought as a non runner and spend 1000s well worth it mind you
3rd glanza - stuarty1s old one no problems whatsoever!
4th glanza - gearbox 2nd gear
5th glanza - gearbox also 2nd gear.

is 2nd gear a common problem or is it cause i just drive them like i stole them lol

and in near 3 years of driving 26 cars later ive learnt alot!

also when i shift the glanza ive got atm im going across the boarder as i drool over a few of them nightly on donedeal.ie
which may i add is probably the best car site for buying ive ever come across.

Well i think most people no my answer to this as mines just got back on the road, but i have owned 8 cars and not one of them has made it a year without some sort of issue ...maybe its me ..

It's a mild steel zisco bought it off Danb87.
The job is not that hard indeed just 10 nuts, but I need a lot of tools for that which I haven't got, I have a standard radiator and the AC, there isn't much room to work with.

I remember my old imported N/A starlet and had no problems for years and 45K miles and I spent just 350 on service during 3.5 years!

n/a sensibility

@Paul_JJ: n/a's have fewer parts so in essence, fewer things likely to go wrong thus fewer overall problems.. :D hehehe

All the problems I have with my car are not turbo related - apart from may be the Manifold! On the other hand turbo generates a lot of heat which give a lot of stress on the engine, headgasket, seals.....

Seized callipers - assume got nothing to do with turbo -)

By my scale 1 to 10 I'd say my car for the last 15 months has been around 5!
