hi guys,

recently brought a starlet gt turbo and it has a 'Jam Racing' box attached in the engine bay.
Reading up on net & putting it on google etc it seems to be a 'fuel cut controller'.
Is this right?
Anyone had or got one?
Or heard of these before?

My car goes very well indeed,so i assume its doing no harm, but wanted to make sure as i'm new to the car etc

thanks guys...

Hi mate,

Yeah thats sounds fine mate, alot of people run these fcd's hks, jam etc

Here is the result of fcd search :)

- What is a Fuel cut defender?

Thefalls answers:

The HKS [since most of us use this one] FCD is an electronic device developed to properly raise the factory fuel cut level on factory turbocharged vehicles. As modifications are made to optimize engine performance, the factory fuel cut is often triggered by higher boost levels which activate a fuel delivery cut-off as a failsafe procedure. Symptoms of fuel cut are hesitation, bogging, and/or illumination of diagnostic indicators.

The electronic signal from the FCD will raise the fuel cut level to accommodate for the additional boost without triggering fuel cut and/or an engine diagnostic light. The FCD installation is designed to be easily integrated with the VPC/F-CON or factory ECU harness.

Warning: Due to the characteristics of this product, higher than recommended or unsafe boost levels may be attained by the installation and use of the FCD. This may result in severe damage to the vehicles engine or other mechanical parts.A fuel delivery upgrade is suggested and consulting a trained technician before the purchase and use of the FCD.

sorry, yeah i know its not like the HKS one, BUT, chances are it might be, and if he isnt running above fuel cut, there is no need to have it in.

So if its there, it probably is running above fuel cut.

and if its not, id take it out anyway as on a cold winters day etc it will quite easily hit fuel cut (or not with the FCD and could do somedamage)

Aye, i just thought i would elaborate as i didnt explain myself very well, im having a fuzzy day and all my posts dont make that much sense today (Too much rum last night!)

Yup, lets see some more specs lad then we will know for definate. But unless it has appropriate modifications to enable it to run safely i would remove it.

hi guys, thanks for all replies.

as far as i can gather, it has had uprated plugs & leads, and an air filter, other than that, nothing else engine wise has changed, other than fact it has had a glanza v engine fitted(which i believe are same as GT engines anyway?) so can only assume other one went bang which is a seems unlikely for a toyota???
I have loads and loads of paper work, but i have a problem....its all in Japanese lol!!

Sorry for all questions guys, like i said very new.

How would i check if ecu is standard or aftermarket?

Also, i have a really good local guy here who tunes evo's/jap cars and i spoke to him and he said he'd look it all over etc,he's excellent with jap cars

if you dont have anything else uprated.. remove the that thing if its a fuel cut defender! as j25 said.

If you tell the guy your getting to look at it that you need to find either an aftermarket FPR, or ECU etc, (ECU is under the glovebox, take the glovebox out with 2 screws and have a look at it, it will either have a jam racing sticker or similar on)

MAKE SURE TO KEEP IT OFF BOOST WHEN DRIVING IT TO BE CHECKED!!!!!!!!!!!!

this is in my suspicions what caused the previous engine to fail, if there are no supporting mods to go with the JAM FCD then it needs to be removed ASAP.

will also be a good idea to get your boost levels checked, should be no higher than 0.8bar without the correct supporting modifications

Good luck lad
