jumping out of 5th gear?

is there any temporary fix for this? its really odd as it has only starlet doing it today. it has always had some movement of the stick back and forth when you go on and off the accelerator, but not it falls out of gear.

its only when the car is cruising in 5th, maybe accelerating lightly. never when booting it. its also getting worse throughout the day :(

i have a box to put on it but its on my other GT and i want that to be mapped first before i start pulling it apart again.

any ideas? (and its had fresh oil and its at the correct level and it has no leaks)

It has been discussed many times. it is the worn syncro, it is relatively cheap to fix... and can be fixed in 12 hrs... no, there are no correct temp fix, except that u hold your hand on it, or on races i saw that some uses a wire or an elastic rope to hold it in place.
No u should not buy a gbx, the same ll hapen, buy a syncro...
It happened becouse the 5th is hard to dselect, and becuse u or the prev owner rested his hand on the leaver.

U sure its a syncro? All they do is slow the cog down enough to slot it in when changing gears. Thats why worn syncros crunch gears cause the relative parts are still spinning.

I'd be more inclined to say it was a damaged tooth or something on the 5th gear.

a tooth would make a whining noise, and the box doesnt seem to make any real strange noises. the synchro unit holds the gears in place ones selected so it could well be that.

i already have a box to go on the car. its on my other one at the moment. i need this car for work so once ive messed about getting a box on it that works i will fix the knackered one myself.

ill have to try and put up with it for a few weeks and try not to go anywhere which needs me to use 5th gear ;)

The reverse is a different thing... i think u should look for the positioner balls on the turrets.. or i dont know how does it called... the little bearing balls pushed with springs, and fitted from the house wall...

dec. i think u should do the fix... i think the most time is to remove and to put back the gbx. when it is down u just have to remove 8 bolts, clean the contact surface, remove the gear with a bearing puller, and build it back.. no time.. but whatever...

if that was the only problem i would consider doing this, but it crunches in every gear too so really needs all the synchros replaced.

it has always been a bit of a crap box so it was just a matter of time before i had to get it off and repair it.

Happened lots on the high torque Corollas.

A common fix was a piece of rope or bungy cord round the stick onto the dash, to hold it into 5th position!

like i said. should only be a month max before i can sort the box so i think that kinda idea will have to be used ;)

cheers lad!

I`ve seen it before, it works. You will find that you might leave the bungee on and go 1st, 2nd (holding it in 2nd), 3rd, 5th a lot!!!

It surprising how often you can avoid 2nd gear lol.

It will be the 5th gear assembly, HorwathBence posted a pic of it in a thread discussing this issue before. Best thing to do would be hold it in with your knee when your in 5th ;)

Jeap. the bungy rope is cheap-ish. All cool guy drives in 45°. So knee on the left seat (couse here is no handrest) and hold the leaver... may u buy some fux, and shave your head... :-D

sorry.. i think i should go sleep some

I had that problem on my old old starlet popping out of 5th and it was the gbox mount that was worn too much movement

my mounts are ok though. 2 are full of polyeurethane resin.

it will pop out while cruising so isnt engine movement related

"it has always had some movement of the stick back and forth when you go on and off the accelerator"

to me that sounds like the mounts, mines is solid when in gear but i had a problem with that on a previous car and it turned out to be the engine mounts being very weak (that was a clio though lol)

My dad spoke to a gearbox specialist about this problem, as soon as starlet was mentioned he said the most common cause is the 5th gear assembly. £200 in bits plus labour

it can not be the mount. The gear leaver is connected to the gbx via 2 wires, whic are flexible, and the other end is bolted to the gearbox... so even if the complete engine is on the ground, and all mounts are crashed u stil can shift...

exactly. my other starlet has a bit of movement in 5th gear, and that has perfectly good trd mounts all round.

my dad agrees that it is just something related to the 5th gear assembly causing the problems. i could probably do it in situ, but the box isnt great so im going to swap it with a half decent one and then strip the current one down and see what is what.

Yeah get the box you currently have rebuilt. that way you know exactly whats going on with it, new syncros and shim whatever needs to be shimmed ;)
