Rings dont bed in with synthetic oil really, I am not sure about semi synthetic as there are that many variations of it.

They need the mineral oil to create a lot of heat in the rings to allow them to shape to the bores, as they are never truely round unless rebored.

A good quality mineral oil, I use Mobil S 5W-30 in my engine and change it and the filter every 3K or so.

iv always run 10w-40 semi in my forged engine and has never caused an issue after 10k miles of use. some one was syaing to a mate the other day it should always be 5w-30 though? glad the noise has gone josh, sounded naff when i was over lol, just the turbo issue now then, has "he" gotten back to you yet??

its not big ends or anything to do with the pistons mate...... iv got the exact same problem with mine right now.

Iv forged mine myself with 75mm weisco pistons and scat rods, ACL bearings ARP crank bolts.. when i start the car from cold it makes a loudish tapping sound which is piston slap until its warm.

The bottom end is perfect as far as im concerned as the car runs very well, but when i give it a slight bit of throttle you can hear a tapping sound even when warm, iv narrowed it down to the top end for deffo. Its gotta be tappets or something like that but im still trying to work out what it is exactly.

Mine was never like it until i stripped it, it wont be your bottom end mate, if it was it wouldnt run properly.

but mine doesnt chuck out blue smoke mate

the blue smoke is my turbo which has done less than 1000 kms

i was driving the car today and i dont actually think the noise has gone. i heard it all today. im like you and im certain its not bottom end.
i get the slap when i start it from cold but this noise is not the same, its top end just dont know what.

have you tried anything yet?

not yet no, i didnt re-shim mine so mine may be because of that but i cant be certain, it does only sound like one tappet, but i dont know how to stop it yet.

i had mine re shimmed by an engineering company when they skimmed the head. And ive double checked all the valve clearances. Not sure what to do next. But like you said it runs absolutely spot on it just makes this noise.
