Knocking noise

Right my 91 ep82 has started this knocking noise from what seems like the drivers side wheel. It doesn't always do it so I went for a drive round the local estate and it seems to do it more from slow starts not agressive ones and not always when the road is potholed either; also seems to somtimes do it when turning left. I've had the car in the air and can feel some movement of the wheel when juggling left to right (none up and down). I could feel a bit of play in th track rod end but both sides have a little play (drivers side more than passenger side!)

So I'm thinking track rod ends and cv joint, can anyone else advise based on my longwinded description? Thanks

Without the engine running there will be some play here as the power assisted steering rack will not be pressurised. Check for this play again but with the engine running to rule it out as the cause of the noise you are hearing. To check the balljoints in the trackrod ends, remove the wheels and pull/lever the balljoints vertically away from the steering knuckle, if you see or feel any movement in either joint then that rod end will need replacing. You can also check the bottom balljoints in a similar way by levering the lower arms downwards away from the steering knuckle and checking for any movement in either joint.

I would advise you to raise the front of the car again, check all fixings/joints are tight and secure, check the ARB mountings are in good condition and also the clearance between the ARB and lower arms is sufficient. When the car has been lowered back down on the ground, bounce the car at both from corners to check if the noise is coming from either front damper.

By this point, if you still haven't found anything obvious, go find yourself a quiet and empty car park with a smooth flat surface and throw the car through a few figure of 8 manoeuvres to try and identify if the noise is drivetrain or suspension related.

If the noise can be heard more so when the steering is turned on either lock then it could be an indication of a worn outer CV joint.
