Just heading out to grab the screwdrivers from the garage for this one..

HP Pavilion ZD8000
Few years old
Getting this when I switch it on:

PXE-E61: Media test failure
PXE-M0f: Exiting Intel PXE ROM

Figured it wasn't booting from the hard drive so ran a hard drive self test - this told me there was no hard drive. I'm going to check the cables and hard drive if I can get into it.

Any tips on ripping one of these things apart?

If they are any harder than a Starlet to work at I'll be lost lol.

Cheers for any input folks,

Jay

1st remove ur battery, then remove ur mother board CMOS battery.
Assemble all After 5 min

ran a hard drive self test If u see the same problem then may be ur HDD gone.
Replace a HDD.
I think ur problem will be solved

I'm sure it has screws on the back which lift the keyboard off the front with little clips on the front good luck!

Yeah PXE boot is the system trying to boot off your network card, so your HDD is is being skipped in the boot sequence

OR

Your system's boot order is set to use the network card first and is failing. Change the boot sequence to use the HDD first

Does sound like it's nackered though if it cant find the HDD

not sure where the hdd is in one of these but typically the hdd is on the side of the machine with a small screw holding the caddy tray for the hdd in place.

Remove the hdd make sure there is no dust in the connector. Replace the hdd and reboot. If the hdd is still not found-

When you switch on your laptop press F2 or delete etc to get in to the bios. The detected hdd's should be listed in the bios. If the bios does not see the hdd then the hdd is either dead or the hdd controller is dead.

Was there any signs the hdd was going? weird clicking or generally noisey operation?

If you know someone with a laptop you can remove their hdd and put it in your machine (many laptops use the same hdd's). Boot in to the bios and see if it is detected. If it is then your problem is the actual hdd, if it does not see that hdd either it could be your hdd controller or a cable fault.
