i have had all types of smartphone and once apon a time used to be anti iPhone! then i eventually ended up with a 3gs and was hooked, why should you be able to bluetooth tracks ? thats copyright

What if you just recorded it? say a video and want to give it to your mate, oh no wait you need to get home first to put it on the MAC using special software, then put it on the usb stick only to find out that the Iphone records horrible video quality.......

microsoft (bill gates) helped build some of the software for apple many years ago though, and apple almost went bust back in 2001 but there competitor bill gates gave them a loan.

to me a phone is a phone, the sony xperia is awsome compared to my iphone, battery lasts about 3 days.

now back to laptops, i have to say the mac, purely because it is computing made easy and if something goes wrong customer service is one of a kind

What kind of a warranty do you get with the macs and what sets the customer service apart?

think you get a year, but you can buy an apple 3 year apple care, there service is just immense! just book an appointment at an apple store take your device there and they sort it there and then!

my mate got an iPad 2 day of release and dropped it the day after! apple gave him a brand new one even though it was't a warranty problem for free! i have broken my back cover on my iPhone 4 before and they fixed it for free while i waited took about 10 mins.

they really are awesome in the apple store! theres not many other manufacturers that will look at one of there products and fix it there and then, any pc I've had has had to be sent off for repair.

May be I don't like it because I never use customer service and being an IT professional with 17 years of experience, I simply don't need it.

I would stay away from Dell - they don't make computers, they just build them. I can build you one, better then Dell would!
Mac - I don't like Apple, would never buy one personally.

Vaio - not the best laptops - designed mainly for multimedia usage, also Sony makes pretty good Screens -)

To give you an advice, I need to know why do you need a laptop, what do you do on them? Do you carry it with you all the time? or using it at home? Is the weight and battery life important factors for you? Do you play games on the Laptop? Or is just to watch some videos?

Would you recommend the sony vaio lap top,

I would stay away from Dell - they don't make computers, they just build them.

ehhh what? So you think HP make all the components for their laptops or Sony or Apple or lenovo? No laptop manufacturer "makes" their own computers. They spec machines and assemble them from parts which they purchase from electronics manufacturers or in some cases use some parts made by other parts of their organization.

As for your comment regarding being able to build a machine better than Dell would, of course you would. I worked for them on their early life testing team carrying out hardware testing on their laptops that were due to come out in 6 months. The machines are spec'd and built and are then handed to a team of testers. Every aspect of the machine is punished for a month. Reports are submitted as to what works and what does not. A month later a revised version arrives and the process happens all over again. Any laptop being sold to the public may have gone through 10 or 20 revisions before being sold. And you could build a better machine? By sticking some components together?

Ive been building PC's since I was 14 and I have seen first hand what goes in to the design and build of machines by computer manufacturers, its not comparing apples with apples. That said of course they get it wrong every once in a while, if you were pumping out millions of machines every year a percentage of them would experience problems.

I finished working for Dell in 2001 and have no loyalty to them at all but since then I have worked for companies that have used Dell and their ultra portable latitude D series have served me very well, among the most reliable machines I have ever had. Compared to a Toshiba which I had for 1 year in my current company and it died. I am now on a HP and it seems to be holding up reasonably well.

Personally I am not in to MAC machines, they are not for me. I love their iPhones and I love my iPad, very handy for work when travelling and dont want to drag a laptop with me.

If I was looking for a reasonably priced laptop today I would go Dell.

You can pick up some decent seconhand/refurbed alienware m15x for about £600 with an i3/i5. I've got the latest one with a mid spec. Best laptop I've had but still nothing on a desktop.

Mac's are way overpriced for what they are but when you get used to the interface its just like anyother laptop.

Now I'm going to gao back into salesman mode...If your doing photoshop or any 2dphoto/ video editing you dont need a massive spec laptop.

Pentiums i3/i5/i7 processors will easily handle photoshop without a dedicated graphics card. 3d editing is what gets juicy something like CAD will need a graphics chip.

With regards to brand...Like I say to every single customer I have ever sold a laptop too. The Brand will at most only make the screen and keyboard. All the bits inside will come from some other company.Saying Sony is better than say Acer when talking consumer laptops is like saying Tesco's own brand orange juice is better than morrisons.

Sony are the waitrose of the consumer electronics world here in the UK. They do the same job as any other brand but spec for spec sony will be more expensive.

Theres my opinion.

Can you not run partition on a Mac and put a windows portal that can run any windows program?

Mac's have a built in OEM tool that allows you to run windows on your mac but cant remember what its called. Its slightly more difficult on a windows machine though , as MAC wont support all the hardware thats availible out there and something to do with windows machines having an awkward bios or something

I didn't mean that I can build better than dell. I meant I would get better specs for the same money! At the end of the day all of those companies think is a profit. And to do that they need to get the parts as cheap as possible. I seriously doubt that Dell would ever use High Spec Memory in their PC's or Software Controlled PSU for example. They simply build computers and don't make anything at all.

Samsung makes a lot of stuff, monitors, hard drive, RAM, optical drives and other - so buying a laptop from them you would know that most of the parts inside - apart from the motherboards and the CPU - would be of their own make and they will offer 3 years warranty - unlike Dell when you have to pay extra for it. Unfortunately most of the Retailers will not tell you that and ask you to pay extra for the warranty - money for nothing.

Asus makes awesome motherboards, also optical drives, monitors and many other stuff - combined with Samsung would make a very good laptop for a good price, way better than Dell. Their Laptops are really good and come with 2 year warranty, where is in Dell you have to pay extra for it.

Sony - again - buying a laptop you would get a Sony screen and that would be a good quality.

IBM/Lenovo - completely different world [at least used to be] - compared to cars you can call this Mercedes - not cheap at all, not the fastest either but very reliable and business orientated.

So what does exactly Dell make? Nothing - they just put their label on the product, put it this way - they're not mechanics they're fitters. They're cheap that's why so popular!

If you had a chance to build your own car - would you do that? or would you still buy a branded one? Exactly the same with computers!

See my topic above! Acer makes shit monitors, Sony makes decent ones and

Over the years, Sony has introduced these standards:
Umatic (~1968)
Betamax (1975)
Betacam (1981)
Compact Disc with Philips (1982)
3.5 inch Floppy Disk (1982)
Video8 (1985)
DAT (1987)
Hi8 (1988)
MiniDisc (~1990)
Digital Betacam (~1990)
miniDV (1992)
DVD with others (~1995)
DVCAM (1996)
Memory Stick (1998)
Digital8 (1999)
Universal Media Disc (~2003)
HDV with JVC (~2004)
Blu-ray Disc with Panasonic and others (2006)

What did Acer invented or ever introduced?

And yes, Sony is better than Acer in many many ways and they cost more for a reason, not just the brand name. Sony simply has higher standards then Acer, what is a fail for Sony monitor would be good for Acer.

Compact Disc with Philips (1982) philips created this
3.5 inch Floppy Disk (1982) fairly certain this is an IBM creation
Video8 (1985)

MiniDisc (~1990)

Memory Stick (1998) lol you wish they made this
Digital8 (1999)
Universal Media Disc (~2003)
HDV with JVC (~2004)
Blu-ray Disc with Panasonic and others (2006) Hellz yeh they did. Long live bluray:rockon:

Fist off where did I say acer made good moniters? (I was talking about laptop screens anyway) and just so you know, sony is just like any other laptop manufacturer. They just assemble it. I wasnt saying that sony are crap (even though I personally think there is better stuff out there...but i do like they're home cinema systems)

The best thing SONY invented was the bluray cos hddvd was a pile of garbage. Those list of things above is just the reason jo public thinks theyre amazing. I mean their stuff isnt bad but its expensive for what it is <- That was the point I was trying to make
