ehhh what? So you think HP make all the components for their laptops or Sony or Apple or lenovo? No laptop manufacturer "makes" their own computers. They spec machines and assemble them from parts which they purchase from electronics manufacturers or in some cases use some parts made by other parts of their organization.
As for your comment regarding being able to build a machine better than Dell would, of course you would. I worked for them on their early life testing team carrying out hardware testing on their laptops that were due to come out in 6 months. The machines are spec'd and built and are then handed to a team of testers. Every aspect of the machine is punished for a month. Reports are submitted as to what works and what does not. A month later a revised version arrives and the process happens all over again. Any laptop being sold to the public may have gone through 10 or 20 revisions before being sold. And you could build a better machine? By sticking some components together?
Ive been building PC's since I was 14 and I have seen first hand what goes in to the design and build of machines by computer manufacturers, its not comparing apples with apples. That said of course they get it wrong every once in a while, if you were pumping out millions of machines every year a percentage of them would experience problems.
I finished working for Dell in 2001 and have no loyalty to them at all but since then I have worked for companies that have used Dell and their ultra portable latitude D series have served me very well, among the most reliable machines I have ever had. Compared to a Toshiba which I had for 1 year in my current company and it died. I am now on a HP and it seems to be holding up reasonably well.
Personally I am not in to MAC machines, they are not for me. I love their iPhones and I love my iPad, very handy for work when travelling and dont want to drag a laptop with me.
If I was looking for a reasonably priced laptop today I would go Dell.
I didn't mean that I can build better than dell. I meant I would get better specs for the same money! At the end of the day all of those companies think is a profit. And to do that they need to get the parts as cheap as possible. I seriously doubt that Dell would ever use High Spec Memory in their PC's or Software Controlled PSU for example. They simply build computers and don't make anything at all.
Samsung makes a lot of stuff, monitors, hard drive, RAM, optical drives and other - so buying a laptop from them you would know that most of the parts inside - apart from the motherboards and the CPU - would be of their own make and they will offer 3 years warranty - unlike Dell when you have to pay extra for it. Unfortunately most of the Retailers will not tell you that and ask you to pay extra for the warranty - money for nothing.
Asus makes awesome motherboards, also optical drives, monitors and many other stuff - combined with Samsung would make a very good laptop for a good price, way better than Dell. Their Laptops are really good and come with 2 year warranty, where is in Dell you have to pay extra for it.
Sony - again - buying a laptop you would get a Sony screen and that would be a good quality.
IBM/Lenovo - completely different world [at least used to be] - compared to cars you can call this Mercedes - not cheap at all, not the fastest either but very reliable and business orientated.
So what does exactly Dell make? Nothing - they just put their label on the product, put it this way - they're not mechanics they're fitters. They're cheap that's why so popular!

If you had a chance to build your own car - would you do that? or would you still buy a branded one? Exactly the same with computers!
