hello all,

basically im in need of some advise, my dad as a graduation present wants to buy me a decent watch that i can keep for a very long time,

However i know very little about the subject and need some advice, ive got about 350GBP to spend and want somethin that is timeless and classic really. I like the reimond veil stuff but apart from that i dont really have any other ideas,

suggestions welcome

cheers
mike

For that money, I would go for an older watch. You could get an omega seamaster or a Rolex Oyster etc. That way in a couple of years it will still be worth the same or go up in value rather than being worth a tenner. Plus the workmanship on the older watches knocks spots of anything that is made now in that price range.

hmm ive always loved the seamaster but thought it was out of my price range, where about would i look for a "second hand" one? ( did ya see what i did there?)

Not Ebay, but worth a look to get price ideas. Best bet is specialist watch auctions. There are plenty around and that is where the dealers will buy from before selling on at a profit. I have been in the antiques trade for years so know what Im talking about. You would be amazed at the mark up retailers add on so go to an auction and have a look then bid away. You can get some really nice watches for that price.

hey mate thats a cool present to get :) I love getting watches as gifts :)

Check out the watch thread I started a while ago

Most of my watches in there will be a bit modern for what you are after! You mentioned Raymond Weil, I have a nice RW watch and my advice would be if buying one new to look outside the UK. My one cost me over a grand cheaper in USA than I could find it in the UK or Ireland so it is well worth looking around!

Be careful though as the cheaper RW watches apparently are not automatic which would be a bit of a pain in the arse if they are manual wind and would not have the same appeal if they were battery driven. This is mine here

Also... if you are looking for something really timeless looking just go and pop your head in to a jewellers shop and pick something that looks plain, simple and suits the size of your wrist. My brother and I got my father a really nice simple watch for a few hundred quid and it looks fantastic on him... really suits him and did not cost the earth.

Best of luck :)

Again... what a great gift to get :)
