i was removing it to paint my rocker cover and it just broke into a million pieces. i ordered a new one from toyota and it doesnt seem to fit. is there a bit or rubber that goes in between?

Thats the rubber grommet that it sits into.
Sounds like you didnt get the rubber grommet as they come seperate from toyota i think. The rubber goes rock hard on them over time and just breaks up. Hope this helps

It should just pop in I would think put some wd40 to help it in but not to hard are you will break the new one aswell..
