Reverse gear light activation problem

If my reverse light only activates when the stick is halfway in reverse gear, does it mean I need to replace the reverse light switch, or is it just the activator at the gear stick which is misaligned?

The switch is on top of the gearbox, not at the stick. Check its screwed in fully but it may need replaced.
