do both need to be run in conjunction with each other if running a bar of boost or will it suffice with just the rrfpr?

You possible don't need either.
Stock fueling is enough to run 1 bar ct9
AFR gauge is only used to check fueling and does need to be run all the time.

I'm running 1 bar with emu and blitz ebc.

i think from one of his last posts he means the HKS AFR?!

As I said in my last post to ya mate, I ran mine with a FCD and AFR for a good while at 1 bar, and even with a stock manifold, cat and stock exhaust with no problems, then I was advised to get an uprated mani, decat and exhaust as well as get a RRFPR fitted, but ... I did run just the AFR for ages with no problems. But as I said, your best to get it checked by a tuner, as nobody can really give you a definite answer, as all cars/engines are different
