excuse the lack of knowledge but can someone tell me exactly what a screamer pipe is for and what it does ?

i've heard of a screamer pipe but never had any experience with one so was just wondering.

A screamer pipe is conected to your external wastegate. Once you hit an ex amout of boost (what ever psi spring rate you have) your wastegate then opens up, and the boost then exits outta your screamer pipe. Usually u have them pointing down into a safe location.

Ya then get this loud screaming noise (some like it some dont) maybe thats why they call em screamer pipes? lol.

Hope that gives ya an idea mate.

Id post some pics up ov 1 but dont have any sorry.

that's cool mate, thanks for the info. there's another glanza round my way which is LOUD and i thought he might have one on his but i was unsure what they were for. so they only work with external wasgate then ?

anyone got any pics of a screamer pipe ? fitted or unfitted.

Id say he would be running a wastegate with a screamer pipe then. They sound awsome! Mines running 1 and i love it.

And yes, you can only run them with an external wastegate. I dont see how you could run 1 on an internal 1? But then again, who knows. lol. Over here in NZ you have to plumb your screamer pipe back into your exhaust, as its illegal to have it exiting into the atmospahre. So that whole (screaming noise) is taken away.Kinda sucks!

yeah you can run a screamer with internal gate if you have a 2 piece downpipe. ie. downpipe and wastegate are seperated, gate vents to atmo.

the only real benefits of having a screamer pipe are slightly improved exhaust flow out of the turbo, less turbulance in the system (when the wastegate is open) but you wont notice any difference by driving it on the road (apart from the racket they make :haha: )

thanks dan.

how much are they ? it seems to be a real love/hate thing with them don't it ? some love em and some can't stand em.

"the racket they make" lol

lol nope.. :p

the turbo exhaust side will have the wastegate flap (as seen on the left) and the big hole on the right is where the exhaust turbine sits. a normal downpipe or decat pipe will have them venting together in the same pipe, a screamer pipe will look like the one above, where the wastegate has its own pipe, which vents straight to atmosphere, rather than letting it exit through the exhaust system like it normally would

in danthemans (1st) pic, the bigger pipe is the exhaust, the smaller one is the screamer. in this particular pipe it would be for a turbo with an internal wastegate, for an external wastegate the takeoff for the wastegate would normally come off the manifold side of the turbo.
and also the cat would come after all this in an exhaust.
