search button

over the last few months....i've been observing the site---especially the performance sections (engine, suspension, gearbox and electrics)

it seems like sometimes members dont want to or even bother to use the search button----and i must admit that it works splendidly (well i know there was that past issue of 3 letter words:p, which gave some problems--i dont know if that has been sorted)........i can understand a newbie doing this:teach:,,,,,,,however its just not only newbies who are doing it.....

sometimes u can get the same basic topic asked 4/5 times in a week:haha::haha: (ex. what's required to run a tdo4 turbo)......and sometimes u get the questions which have no "safe" answer (ex. will my engine be safe if i set the fpr at YY bar to run XX boost?):holdit:......and then sometimes u get the "personal" arguements which come when opinions differ:argue::slap:...it that really helping anything/anyone?

i've also realised that some of the more senior (and sometimes very knowledgeable) members dont post or reply as often..........could that have anything to do with it??..........have some members started to hit the "ignore" button?

just some observations:cool:

and i'm not one to frequent the chillout/general section,,,but just thought i would put this out there-----i did do a search to see if they were similar topics in here by the way---lol

this shoulda been in the feedback section ;)

I know what u mean tho... Fuel cut is another annoyin repeater! :haha:

Its nothing but laziness to be honest. The search function is fine on the site and it still cant search anything under 3 letters but what people dont understand is it searches the whole thread for the word you put in not just the title so every thread can be found through the search option. I will take up any challenge to find a thread if people dont believe it.
Then the site has went firther and put in tags so the most popular tags are listed for you to click on and it will automatically search for all threads related.
People have no excuse except laziness but then again what can you do they can use the site how they wish so there aint really much we can do...if you know what I mean.

Totally agree however if you search for Fuel then it will bring up any thread with Fuel in it which will include any thread referencing Fuel Cut. People just need to understand how to use the system.

ok....maybe a mod can move it for me....

thanks dude

Moved it for you buddy, funnily enough though this has been covered before.lmao:haha:. Thats a joke by the way.

lol...i figured it might have been........but i did my search in the general/chill out rooom section...lol......so that's why i did not turn up anything i suppose

which just goes to show---if anyone does the search wrong, u wont get the results you're looking for:p

i just hate to see this site losing good/knowledgeable members.....we really cant blame them when they hit the "ignore" button

i must admit too....the thought has also crossed my mind on a few occasions now, which i never imagined it would:eek: ,,,,,,but seeing certain vibrant members reduce thier activity kind of re-affirms my observations:(:(

guess we just have to wait and see how this trend turns out:)

As for the lack of responses by more experienced members, i'd say that's down to not wanting to wear out their keyboards and brains by answering the same question 80 times. ha ha

yeah...lol
well i'm getting a new keyboard:haha::haha:...and i'll be investing a little more of my time into other activities in my life now as well:cool:...i will still find a little time for ttgt in between though:rockon:

lol... boy oh boy dont i blame u bro :haha:

i do agree, in fact im one of those who has cut back quite a bit on reposting the same things xtimes over lol it gets tireing & extremely annoying having to repeat the same crap over & over..

when somebody has a mechanical or unusual problem i still try to help out/ give whatever advice i can, but the thing is if u consider how many reposted questions are put up im starting to give them a miss.. like you said the search/tag function works brilliantly, it would do the sit a real lot of good if they where used more, not to mention save up alot of "extra" webspace, which could be used for other features if saved..

every little bit helps & it doesnt take much to click a button lol ;)

good thread :)

remember we added the google search function also which allows searching for 3 letter words and some people find it a more familiar tool than the usual site search.

As mentioned above we also attempted to assist by using tags and a tag cloud on the main forum page so you can see commonly used keywords in an effort to reduce the number of similar questions being asked.

I think with all that said if a member does ask something that has been covered before within 2 minutes someone has usually carried out the search for them and posted a link to a relevant thread.

We are very fortunate that our community has SO much information but that brings its own challenges in how best to deliver that information to the people who need it. This is something I have been thinking about quite a lot recently and have some ideas on how we could potentially do this so expect some changes/additions soon. To give you an idea of what I mean... I believe that the forum is excellent for interactive communication but sometimes I dont want to chat about something I just want the information :)

But you could also arque that with each new thread comes new opinions and information from members that have not previously voiced their views on a particular subject.

This would come into play especially in more disputed topics.

However i do understand the repetitive nature of threads like fuel cut etc.

But thats just one of the things with forums, people usually will always want answer to their own direct query unfortunately.

It offers a form of reassurance and peace of mind to most people, not everyone is an absolute guru on cars.

great post and so very true!
The ultimate aim would be to have a repository of commonly requested information and then have people begin their own threads if they need more info but the basics are easy to find and in one central location. You might say "we already have this" with the "awesomely helpful" section and to a degree we have but there is no harm revisiting how we do things and seeing if we can make them more effective for members.

Glad you can see my point gv:)

The helpful section is very very helpful i must add although i havn't seen a few things in there.

I think you mentioned something a while ago about incentives for tutorials, i think thats a great idea,

good point boss:cool:...respect due
and everyone's opinion is welcomed and any positive new insights will help to strengthen ttgt's data base

its through controlled and worhtwhile discussion that we can learn more...tbh, i dont mind disputed topics----that's where u learn a hell of a lot:rockon:,,but then it sometimes give the moderators hell, because some members dont always like thier view/expereince/ways being questioned, which can lead to "arguments and verbal attacks" ...which then detracts from such treads.......but this is life in general, as following the various social/behavorial theories - as each person has different characteristics

there is the utmost respect for individuals wanting to have thier "specific" question answered/replied to.....however, those same individuals should recognise that it may have been tackled before...and a search may cover their exact problem and/or help them to new possibilities surrounding thier issue(s)..........and in the event that thier specific question is not covered ( or parts thereof), then they should certainly post for such info.........the problem appears to be that some don't even use the search button before posting

i'm sure we all agree that the purpose of the search button is not there to hinder a member's development, stop questions or/and to take away in anyway from the progression of the site......but like any search engine, its a tool/mechanism aimed at assisting members (it can be particularly handy when its 2:00 in the morning and u have an urgent questions:):))........and best thing of all, its free lol

great post gorgan.

Imagine if people could freely ask questions on google.com instead of doing a search.... a lot of people will take the easiest path and if you can have a quick answer rather than do a tiny bit of research many people will ask the question. Human nature I suppose
