I guess that check is horizontal part as verticlly old glass is thicker at the bottom due to it being a liquid rather than solid.
Good trick though as steel rulers are not always straight , I find a steel ruler used for cutting will curve in the middle.
It may seem obvious to some but would go very gently and supporting the manifold weight underneath , ie not pressing hard on the glass as it could be very dangerous having both your hands drop onto glass shards if the glass breaks.
