Starlet to Civic Review

Well I am back and thought i would share my views from owning a 1995 GT Turbo going onto a 2008 FN2 Type R Civic.

Back in August 2008 i had to put the Starlet up for sale as when I joined my new company i was led to believe i couldnt use a car older than 3 years if i did not take the company car which i didnt so the GT had to go for a newer model. After some test drives, calculating of spend the Civic came thumbs up. In September of last year GTdan came daaawwnnnn saaarrrthhhh and after swapping £1900 i think it was the GT was gone (yes i almost shed a tear that day!). week later my brand spanking new Milano red Type R GT was delivered and OMG she looked lush. However when things were looking good it went quickly down hill. I missed very much the Torque and defently missed the woosh sounding of the BOV! The Type R just didnt seem to come close to the smile that the GT used to put on my face. My first major modification was fitting a Alpine IVA 502 double din dvd screen/player and Fusion 12" sub and mono block amp. That kept me happy for few weeks lol!

After a night scouting around I brought an AEM induction kit for it just to see if that could help bring back that good old smile I once had but sadly it didnt. The noise especially when vtec kicked in was amazing however due to the poor designing of Honda (or a clever one to stops modifers) I suffered major heat soak and flat spot from 2k to 3k so off it came and replaced with standard air box. This month however i have gone a bit crazy after alot of reads on the internet and brought a pipercross induction kit which comes with a heat shield and so far so good no power loss! I have also fitted a decat brought off ebay against what alot of people said on a forum and it does sound lush however still no smile! Also I have had to replace the rear brakes after 28k miles as they were shagged (i was told by Honda this was good they only usually last 10k ) and set of front tyres last less than 18k miles at £180 a corner:mad:

It appears that to get a smile out of the Gen 8 Civic you need deep deep pockets as things are highly expensive such as manifolds that start at £799.00, Gruppe M iduction kit at £900.00, CAt backs at £500 and even with these mods your still making only approx 235bhp and under 175 of torque.

So my final thoughts is the Civic's are expensive to run 280 miles out of a full £45.00 tank and really not that enjoyable, yes the interior is lush, vtec does sound lush when you finally hit it and it is very stylish but fun no not a fun car at all :(

i can understand why people charge/vtec them but £3800 for supercharger kit i dont think so some how!

thats why i wouldnt bother with a civic shit to upgrade, plus a good 350bhp starlet suits just fine ,when i get that sort of power soon:)

I didnt like the fact you needed to drive the shite crossways to get enjoymnet out of them (for me anyway),that and the attitude you get just for driving one, even slowly with a stock exhaust.

i honestly think its not just the civic. most brand new cars are shit (purely IMO) for fun factor. my glanza running 150bhp had a play with a corsa VXR and held its ground shockingly easy. much nippier. ive been in a few new cars that r sposed to be fast, civic, astra vxr, focus, uk scooby etc. and not at all impressed with any of them for what they r, and cost lol. compare them with the equivalent crop of cars from previous generation gone by...escort/fezzy RS, starlet turbo, charade turbo, renault 5, astra gte. bring back the 80's/90's!!

newer cars are more refined now so they dont feel as quick for a start.
the engines also run and produce power alot more smoothly and they have alot of emmission related devices installed which make the car alot different to drive.

i agree that 80/90s cars are great.

this the new shape civic yeah? how did you get a headunit in it? i understood in the current shape civics, with the standard headunit disconnected it wont start, also the heater controls are built in to the radio surround no?

yes it is the new shape. you can buy the fascia off Honda for £125.00 +VAT then yuou have to keep the original HU connected via four cables (mine sits in boot)

lol that seems an awfull lot of effort to change the headunit.

reason i asked was because i work in an audio shop, and the main suppliers of fascia's (celsus and autoleads) dont list anything. and i went to move 1 before that had the headunit out and wouldnt do fuck all. lol

it is actually easy as hell to remove it all once you know, i have done so many ipod adapters into them i can take all that shit out with my eyes closed now. lol.

go to your car, open the drivers door, and bang on the end of the dash (the part ya cant see when the door is closed) quite hard, then try starting it. lol. the fuel pump cut off switch is there and activates to harsh bangs, such as reinstalling that piece of trim. lol

Mine fascia came from Honda its the only people that sell it. They kept the rights for the dash and refused to sell to autoleads etc. Mine took just over a day to install including running the sub and amp and the dash was very stiff to remove (only a week old when i removed it!)

Mine was done by my good friends Sextons in Southampton
