Stock pistons weak?

Just wondering if anyone else has had this problem. this is the 2nd engine iv stripped and there has been a little chunk between both compression rings taken away. thus creating low compression, round about 75psi. im replacing the piston with another genuine toyota item and replacing all the piston rings aswell. new head gasket, water pump and headbolts, oil flush and coolant flush, its also had a new thermostat recently so hopefully after this it should be running sweet again.

The 4e-fte pistons aren't 'weak' but they certainly aren't the strongest thing around. What you're describing is far and away the leading cause of engine failure - ringlands cracking.

point to note - they don't do it without cause, if you've cracked a ringland it will be from pre-ignition (or potentially just very high mileage)

Everything you've described is good and should solve your current issue but it won't stop it from happening again in the same circumstances. What turbo/boost/fueling are you running?

the car is all properly set up on the dyno by dastek, has all supporting fuelling mods etc but i have noticed and im pretty certain this is the cause, that after i fitted the side exit exhaust the boost creeps to just over 1 bar ie around 1.1 which obviously is past the thresh hold. Craigs engine detonated the saem and it was overboosting badly so im convinced this is the problem. may need to port the wastegate slightly
