TERCEL1: FIRST Tune Up?

In the process of changing plugs, wires, distributor cap and rotor
on TERCEL1 and the first thing I ran into when removing the plug
wires was the one in the right cylinder (which # is that?)
seemed a bit funkier looking then the other three...

any opinions as to what may have caused that? Any need for concern?

When I removed the plugs from the motor, I paid close
attention to the plug which came out of that cylinder...
although it didn't look much different then the other three, it
appeared to have some rust where the porcelin meets the
metal part of the plug and I also discovered the spark plug
numbers of the original and the ones I was going to install
are DIFFERENT!

Below is a photo of all the plugs (beginning on the RIGHT with
the one which came from the right-most cylinder)

Anyone see ANY reason for concern?

thanks!

Hi Alfradio,

The "P" on the end of the part number denotes platinum ends where as your new ones are normal tipped, nothing to worry about there. The dis-colouration of the far lead looks like oxidisation; somehow water has entered probably due to a worn seal or ill placed lead. Replace with the new plugs and ensure a tight seal, check on her regularly and report back.

Best Regards,

Toby

as stated on TO.com Al, they're still the correct heat range (6) which is the important part, and obviously the threading is the same or you wouldn't get them in/out of the head....I wouldn't be worried about it...as toby said, just a bit of water got in there

THIS IS WHY I HATE WORKING ON CARS!!!!! -flame-

When I asked around about the plug wires I'd need to replace
the ones which came with my 4EFTE motor, I was told to get
plug wires for a 1992 Paseo... They would fit... so, I went to
THIS SITE and bought the best, the ULTRA PERFORMANCE set for
$103!

Well, after getting home this afternoon, I took the brand new
spark plug, put some anti-seize compound on the threads,
tightened them down carefully. I then VERY CAREFULLY made
note of where the wires coming from the distributor cap went
(to which plug)

I then removed the cap, removed the rotor, installed the new
rotor and replaced the cap and then.... THE UNEXPECTED!!!

I stuck one of my brand new boot/wires down into the plug hole and
pushed.... and pushed... and...

THIS IS AS FAR DOWN AS IT WOULD GO! LOOK!

Did I, by chance, get the wrong wires...

So I put the old wires back. By the way, the funky looking boot
was caused by a tear in the square little black hood which
affords a weather seal preventing moisture from getting down
into the spark plug "well" (that also caused that rust around
the plug from that cylinder)

So, that was that... The NGK plug wires (unlike the wires which
came with the car) are all one piece so, there was nothing I
could do except put the old wires back and be thankful I
attached all the wires to their correct position on the
distributor cap/plug position...

I must admit, however, I was a bit apprehensive when I went
to start the car up... just outta curousity, what would have
happened if I had 2 wires in the wrong place? KABOOM?? or
just wouldn't start?

Well, any suggestion as to which wires I should try NEXT!? :(

... How much would a nice set of RED Magnacore wires (including
the coil wire) set me back and would they be available in the good
old United Snakes Of America?

Toby or Dave can sort you out for the magnecore wires...Dave got me mine, they both ship to the states and are great to deal with :)

as far as what happened if you had the wrong wires in the wrong cylinder....it would run like shit.....we had a customer do a tune-up outside my work (Advance Auto Parts) and he put the plug wires in wrong...it ran liek shit, so I went outside and switched them to the proper order and it ran fine after that
