quick question.. if the timing was out would that result in the engine management light coming on and engine struggle to start?

The engine may struggle to start, but it's unlikely the engine warning light would come on. If the light is on, the ECU should have stored a fault code. Have you carried out a diagnostic check?

yea its code 12 iam getting, i think i may have knocked timing out when fitting a rotor if thats possible? iam taking it to toyota anyways £70ph :(

.. when i crank it over and eventually get it to go the engine management light doesnt go off at all, also while iam cranking it over it sounds different to what it should... hard to explain :S

It's unlikely you've altered the ignition timing unless you loosened the bolts that hold the distributor in place and then moved the distributor.

Double check the connector is firmly plugged into the distributor and all the wires are secure.

update

ok back from toyota and they werent much help they said i need to take it to an import specialist there is one in livingston supposedly.. Anyways they said the timing was slightly out so they put and back to spec and the car wouldnt drive..here is there exact statement:

Checked Non Start/Poor Starting. Code 12
Crankshaft position system Malfunction Unable to check code as no communication with ecu.
Checked plugs, engine is running rich,
adj timing, car not running.

EML would have to be investageted to get to bottom of that first of all incase that has bearing on startrting problem. recommend to go to starlet specialists in livingston for check.


back to square one :(

my next attempt will be to see if the alarm plays any part in the problem, iam losing patience with it.

so its only happend after u changed the rotor arm ? check all the wiring in the dizzy in case u bust it and check the dizzy cap make sure the center bit is ok in it and not worn out . toyota will be a waste of time
