hello all,

i have recently had my car mapped at 250hp and i know roads aren't great at the moment but i haven't been able to put any power down in 1st or 2nd. now when summer comes around i will be looking for some new wheels and i'm wondering what others run. is it worth going for a wider setup with a bigger tyre? i'm currently on 195/50/15 and im thinking of using something like a r888 but i wanted to know if i should look at a 205 or 215?

cheers

steve

have u got an lsd ??? r888's have no road miles in them i bought medium compound r888's and they lasted 1000 miles on the road and they where near bald

Pretty hard to say as you havnt listed what tyre, suspension setup you are running?
Its cold and wet outside.Use right foot launch control.

For any kind of traction in this weather with that power good tyres, coilovers, engine torque damper......etc are essential.

diff i have and will be going on hopefully this week. suspension wise i am running meister r coilovers and tyres are currently toyo T1R. i will also have a complete set of engine poly bush going on at the same time as the gearbox

the engine mounts will help, engine damper, anti lift kit. This weather you wont get anywhere, the above will make for a good setup to get the power down when summer comes.

What boost controller you got? You could limit the boost in each gear/rpm points if you run an AVCR.

lol I'm running about 135bhp and I can't get traction in 1st or 2nd, its the time of the year where you come off the gas :D

Right foot control. IMO doesnt matter what you throw at it suspension/tyre wise. A diff will only spin up both wheels instead of one.

I dont even try and boot it up in 1st and 2nd :(

But as all above are saying all about the right foot pal... but i dont think i am one to say anything about that :drive: lol

Mate you gotta upgrade the suspension on your car to one that is stiffer,,, This will stop the weight from trnsferring to the rear of the car and will keep it on top of the front...for tires you should get performance-oriented tires or racing slicks these types of tires are designed for maximum traction and will help get the power to the ground

to get more tracton you could even deflate the tires to about 20psi this will widen the "footprint" of the tire and will give the tire more surface area to contact with the ground , The more of the tire that makes contact with the groundthe more traction your vehicle will have....And last but not least try reducing the weight of your starbo from behind the engine may aid in increasing traction which This allows a greater percentage of the weight to be concentrated at the front of the vehicle and will increase traction....After getting all this you should now try putting your foot down as normal then look at the difference mate.

Some rep will be appreciated.

Cheers

I understand right foot. That's the quick fix, what I'm really getting at is this will be my track car and I don't want to feather the throttle when on track. Some small sprint tracks use 2nd gear a lot. I also know that widening the tyre does aid in traction, but that's only in a straight line. I just wanted to know what others with high power were running? Or is it a case of staying with 195/50/15.

thanks for all the responses guys, much appreciated.

i completely understand the principle of static contact patch. but the science of tyre contact area all changes as soon as the car is cornering. i did motorsport engineering back in university and we did a module on tyre adhesion. saying that changing the size of a tyre wont change a cars grip is like saying widening the track wont -- completely untrue. yes maybe in a straight line but not in a corner.

now im not saying that a wider tyre is better for a starlet. and im new the the starlets and so i am just asking what is best. possibly 195/50/15 is the best match to these cars. im just asking for your opinions and experiences.

using your right foot isnt a quick fix. racing drivers dont just smash the brake and accelerator down all the time, they control it.

you will get shit traction with t1r's this weather anyway.
